This book serves as a guide to developing and designing the right sound to enhance a product’s identity, its use, its affordance and its acceptance by consumers. It is of interest to designers, researchers, R&D departments, marketing experts and industries involved in the exploration of the new frontiers now offered by sound. We are all immersed in an intangible world of sounds; however, the fact that only an infinitesimal part of the sound to which we are exposed has been wittingly created is often ignored. An interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approach encompassing design methods and design engineering, psychology and cognitive ergonomics, acoustics and psychoacoustics contributes to the improvement of product sound development. Providing readers with an overview of design methods in which sound becomes a new requirement, the book investigates the role of sound from the consumer viewpoint, presents several tools and practical examples of sensory design tools and projects, and lastly, introduces a new tool and method developed expressly to support the design of product sound.

From the largest global resource of new materials comes this innovative new book that connects materials to designers' needs. In each of the seven main sections, this highly illustrated book identifies key trends, looks to the future, and helps design professionals select materials with the most potential for their specific projects. By defining a material based on its base composition rather than current use, Material ConneXion allows a designer to fully understand the potential and limitations for a material while conceiving of its new application. Organized to follow the model of the Material ConneXion library, the book's chapters are organized on seven base compositions including: Metals...

X-linked Adrenoleukodystrophy

X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is the most common leukodystrophy and the most frequent peroxisomal disorder, with an estimated incidence of 1:17,000. This complex neurodegenerative disorder is characterized by a huge clinical variability both in the age of onset and in symptoms. The two main forms are the childhood cerebral ALD (ccALD) characterized by inflammatory demyelination of the central nervous system, and the adult form called adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN), characterized by a non-inflammatory slowly progressive demyelination affecting spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Adrenal insufficiency is usually associated with the nervous symptoms, X-ALD being the main cause of Addison's ...

Materiology

Materiology is directed at all those who are interested in materials and in working with materials: from architects, production designers, and stylists to artists: a handbook for students and new professionals as well as for experienced professionals, written in a clear, understandable style. In four chapters, Materiology offers an overview of the different kinds, processing, and use of materials: 1. Material families: from wood, metal, and plastics to light. 2. Material catalog: over 120 material cards, from basic materials to the latest innovations. 3. Processes: The basics of material processing (spray molds, extrusion, and so on) are presented in a clear manner using numerous diagrams. 4. Thinking ahead: from new processing and use possibilities to questions concerning environmental protection and virtual reality. A prospectus addresses the issues that will be relevant in the future for material development and material use. The second edition has a further 18 material cards and focuses on the challenges of sustainability in design and architecture.
