Expert Advice for Policy Choice

Economic reasoning has thus far dominated the field of public policy analysis. This new introduction to the field posits that policy analysis should have both a broader interdisciplinary base—including criteria from such fields as political science, sociology, law, and philosophy, as well as economics—and also a broader audience in order to foster democratic debate. To achieve these goals, MacRae and Whittington have organized their textbook around the construction of decision matrices using multiple criteria, exploring the uses of the decision matrix formulation more fully than other texts. They describe how to set up the matrix, fill in cells and combine criteria, and use it as an aid ...

Pipe Major Evan Macrae was born on the Black Isle 21st February 1922 and brought up at Armadale, Sleat, Isle of Skye. He learned the pipes from John MacDonald the Ardvasar blacksmith. In 1942 he rejoined the 1st Camerons, and sailed with the Battalion to India. During 1944-45 he fought in the Burma Campaign, being appointed Pipe Major of the 1st Camerons in 1944. His well known march Over the Chindwin commemorates the crossing of the River Chindwin by the 79th in December 1944 during the advance after the battle of Kohima. This is not a war book, nor does it contain details of any war action. It is a collection of experiences he had from growing up in Skye and the West Highlands to finally retiring in Fort William, where he ended up as a peripatetic tutor of bagpipes. This is a memoir of a man who grew up with bagpipes, became a piper, served through several military conflicts while being a piper and ended up giving back as a gift to others, his love of the highland bagpipe.

Legible Religion

Scholars have long separated a few privileged “religions of the Book” from faiths lacking sacred texts, including ancient Roman religion. Looking beyond this distinction, Duncan MacRae delves into Roman treatises on the nature of gods and rituals to grapple with a central question: what was the significance of books in a religion without scripture?

This book recounts my experiences, first in pre-college life and then in various fields, seeking to trace their contribution to what I have written, taught, and done. In my early work in social science I tried basing my research on simple notions of hypothesis testing and measurement of phenomena, applied in fields that had some relation to the making of public policy. The belief that this approach can be socially useful is widespread, but alone i results are very limited. A deeper change for me than that from physical to social science was a shift in my focus, within social science, from academic (basic) to practical. In other words, I discovered that much social science centered on seeking...

Glengarry, Upper Canada’s first major Scottish settlement, was established in 1784 by Highlanders from Inverness-shire. Worsening economic conditions in Scotland, coupled with a growing awareness of Upper Canada’s opportunities, led to a growing tide of emigration that eventually engulfed all of Scotland and gave the province its many Scottish settlements. Pride in their culture gave Scots a strong sense of identity and self-worth. These factors contributed to their success and left Upper Canada with firmly rooted Scottish traditions. Individual settlements have been well observed, but the overall picture has never been pieced together. Why did Upper Canada have such appeal to Scots? Wha...
