GENERATIONS

In general approach and content, this book resembles Alex Haley's best-selling novel, Roots, except that this work contains no fiction. It chronicles thirty generations and a thousand years of Sanders (and Saunders) family evolution beginning before England's earliest days and ending across the Atlantic in colonial Virginia and eventually frontier and later Kentucky. Family figures are portrayed in their own distinctive historical contexts and an extensive genealogy focused on old world lineage is appended. Nearly a thousand chapter notes on sources and names are furnished to assist readers interested in discovering their own ancestry.

Stars and Ribbons

Wassail songs are part of Welsh folk culture, but what exactly are they? When are they sung? Why? And where do stars and pretty ribbons fit in? This study addresses these questions, identifying and discussing the various forms of winter wassailing found in Wales in times past and present. It focuses specifically on the Welsh poetry written over the centuries at the celebration of several rituals – most particularly at Christmas, the turn of the year, and on Twelfth Night – which served a distinct purpose. The winter wassailing aspired to improve the quality of the earth’s fertility in three specific spheres: the productivity of the land, the animal kingdom, and the human race. This volume provides a rich collection of Welsh songs in their original language, translated into English for the first time, and with musical notation. It also provides a comprehensive analysis of these poems and of the society in which they were sung.

This encyclopedia covers the entirety of the Celtic world, both through time and across geography. Although emphasizing the areas where Celtic languages and traditions survive into the present, the work does not slight the reaches of the Celtic empire, which was the largest language and cultural group on earth prior to the rise of Rome. In some 1,500 articles, many representing original research by the finest Celtic scholars, the work covers the Celts from prehistory to the present, giving comprehensive treatment to all topics from myth to music, religion to rulers, literature to language, government to games, and all topics in between.
