Theoretical Models of Chemical Bonding

The renowned theoretical physicist Victor F. Weisskopf rightly pointed out that a real understanding of natural phenomena implies a clear distinction between the essential and the peripheral. Only when we reach such an understanding - that is to say when we are able to separate the relevant from the irrelevant, will the phenomena no longer appear complex, but intelectually transparent. This statement, which is generally valid, reflects the very essence ofmodelling in the quantum theory of matter, on the molecular level in particular. Indeed, without theoretical models one would be swamped by too many details embodied in intricate accurate molecular wavefunctions. Further, physically justifie...

Annotation This volume constitutes seleted papers from the 12th International Conference on Text, Speech and Dialogue, TSD 2009, held in Pilsen, Czech Republic, in September 2009. This volume contains a collection of submitted papers presented at the conference which were thoroughly reviewed by three members of the conference reviewing team consisting of more than 40 top specialists in the conference topic areas. A total of 53 accepted papers out of 112 submitted, altogether contributed 127 authors and co-authors, were selected for presentation at the conference by the program committee and then included in this book. Theoretical and more general contributions were presented in common (plenary) sessions. Problem oriented sessions as well as panel discussions then brought together the specialists in limited problem areas with the aim of exchanging knowledge and skills resulting from research projects of all kinds.

The Science of Disasters

This book tackles these questions by applying advanced methods from statistical physics and related fields to all types of non-linear dynamics prone to disaster. It gives readers an insight into the problems of catastrophes and is one of the first books on the theories of disaster. Based on physical and mathematical theories, the general principles of disaster appearance are explained.

The Peptides, Volume I: Methods of Peptide Synthesis focuses on detailed description of protecting groups, individual amino acids, and coupling reactions. The publication first offers information on amino-protecting and carboxyl-protecting groups, including carboxyl protection by salt formation, esterification, and amide formation and acyl-type, alkyl-type, and urethane protecting groups. The text then examines the formation of the peptide bond and amino acids. Discussions focus on amino acids with the alcoholic hydroxyl group, sulfur amino acids, basic and acidic amino acids, synthesis of peptides by activation of the amino group, and peptide synthesis by activation of the carboxyl group. The manuscript elaborates on the synthesis of cyclic peptides, depsipeptides, peptoids, and the plastein reaction. Topics include synthesis of plastein-active peptides, glycopeptides, phosphopeptides, and S-peptides. The publication is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the methods of peptide synthesis.

Gas Phase Ion Chemistry, Volume 3: Ions and Light discusses how ions are formed by electron impact, ion–molecule reactions, or electrical discharge. This book discusses the use of light emitted by excited molecules to characterize either the chemistry that formed the excited ion, the structure of the excited ion, or both. Organized into 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the extension of the classical flowing afterglow technique to include infrared and chemiluminescence and laser-induced fluorescence detection. This text then examines the experiments involving molecules that are isolated from collisions for periods exceeding several milliseconds. Other chapters consider the photodetachment in negative ion beams and the chemical information that can be obtained from such studies. This book discusses as well the electronic states of the open-shell organic cations. The final chapter deals with ion beam spectroscopy. This book is a valuable resource for chemists and scientists.
