Fortschritte der Chemie organischer Naturstoffe / Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products, Vol. 93

Lignans, by convention, are a group of natural products that are formed by linking two phenylpropanoid units (C C units) by oxidative coupling. Most importantly, in 6 3 a lignan, two (C C units) are bound through the central carbon of their side chains, 6 3 0 i. e. the 8 and 8 positions (1, 2). The occurrence of C C -dimers, linked at sites other 6 3 0 than the 8–8 positions, is also known and these compounds have been termed neolignans (3, 4). As these two groups of compounds have close structural as well as biosynthetic relationships, they are often associated together and incorporated under the general term “lignan” (5). The diverse structural categorization of true lignans and of a...

The volumes of this classic series, now referred to simply as "Zechmeister" after its founder, L. Zechmeister, have appeared under the Springer Imprint ever since the series' inauguration in 1938. It is therefore not really surprising to find out that the list of contributing authors, who were awarded a Nobel Prize, is quite long: Kurt Alder, Derek H.R. Barton, George Wells Beadle, Dorothy Crowfoot-Hodgkin, Otto Diels, Hans von Euler-Chelpin, Paul Karrer, Luis Federico Leloir, Linus Pauling, Vladimir Prelog, with Walter Norman Haworth and Adolf F.J. Butenandt serving as members of the editorial board. The volumes contain contributions on various topics related to the origin, distribution, ch...

Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products 109

This volume comprises three reviews. The first describes isolation, structure determination, syntheses, and biochemistry of the low molecular weight compounds of the secretion of exocrine glands of termies with emphasis to pheromones and defensive compounds. The second review describes recent studies on isolation and structure elucidation of bioactive compounds involved in the life cycle and determination of the molecular mechanisms of the developmental events observed in higher plants. The third contribution reports on the current body of knowledge of African propolis, with a particular emphasis on its chemistry and biological activity.

The Alkaloids

This series is world-renowned as the leading compilation of current reviews of this vast field. Internationally acclaimed for more than 40 years, The Alkaloids, founded by the late Professor R.H.F. Manske, continues to provide outstanding coverage of this rapidly expanding field. Each volume provides, through its distinguished authors, up-to-date and detailed coverage of particular classes or sources of alkaloids. - Up-to-date reviews on a large and very important group of natural products from both a chemical and biological perspective - Comprehensive, dynamic reviews written by leading authors in the respective fields - Broad coverage on the biological aspects

Hormonal Steroids

Information concerning localization of exogenously administered tritiumlabeled steroid hormones in the brain by dry-mount autoradiography was presented. Estrogens, androgens, and glucocorticoids were found to be concentrated and retained in nuclei of certain neurons. The autoradiographic information on the topographic distribution of hormone-neurons (neurons which concentrate, retain, and respond in a specific manner to hormones) suggested that "feedback" areas for the regulation of endocrine glands are not restricted to the hypothalamus and preoptic region. It appeared that gonadotropin and neurons that regulate sexual behavior were widespread within the phylogenetically ancient periventric...
