House of Cards

Robin Dawes spares no one in this powerful critique of modern psychotherapeutic practice. As Dawes points out, we have all been swayed by the "pop psych" view of the world--believing, for example, that self-esteem is an essential precursor to being a productive human being, that events in one's childhood affect one's fate as an adult, and that "you have to love yourself before you can love another."

Street Design

"The best streets in the world's villages, towns, and cities—whether modest or grand—continually remind one that simplicity is part of the recipe for success in this art. The advice of Victor Dover and John Massengale, their historic examples and their own designs, reflect that simplicity." —From the Foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales “Street Design is a lucid, practical and altogether indispensable guide for envisioning and creating vibrant 21st century towns and cities. It should be required reading for every local political leader, planner, architect, real estate developer and engaged urban citizen in America." —Kurt Andersen, host of Studio 360 and author of True Believers "We...

Automotive Prosthetic

  • Categories: Art

In the twenty-first century, we are continually confronted with the existential side of technology—the relationships between identity and the mechanizations that have become extensions of the self. Focusing on one of humanity’s most ubiquitous machines, Automotive Prosthetic: Technological Mediation and the Car in Conceptual Art combines critical theory and new media theory to form the first philosophical analysis of the car within works of conceptual art. These works are broadly defined to encompass a wide range of creative expressions, particularly in car-based conceptual art by both older, established artists and younger, emerging artists, including Ed Ruscha, Martha Rosler, Richard P...

Out There addresses the theme of cultural marginalization - the process whereby various groups are excluded from access to and participation in the dominant culture. It engages fundamental issues raised by attempts to define such concepts as mainstream, minority, and "other," and opens up new ways of thinking about culture and representation. All of the texts deal with questions of representation in the broadest sense, encompassing not just the visual but also the social and psychological aspects of cultural identity. Included are important theoretical writings by Homi Bhabha, Helene Cixous, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, and Monique Wittig. Their work is juxtaposed with essays on more o...

Until now , there has been no monograph on Hans Hartung, the German born French painter (1904 -1989) available in French or English. Now, to celebrate the centenary of his birth, a monogram of this artist will be published to mark the occasion. Hartung's reputation was established when he was awarded the International Grand Prix for his paintings at the 1960 Venice Biennale. He had rejected the early influence of German expressionism and developed an entirely abstract style in which a strong linear element created a rhythmic unity. To survey his huge work, the book Hartung offers ten perspectives of leading art historians, curators and international artists. Each one accurately presents a new point of view that contributes to the understanding of Hartung's work from both an inside and historical angle. Abundantly documented with hundreds of Hartung's creations, knowledgeable and handy, this book introduces the countless challenges involved in this work, essential for the comprehension of the history of modern art.
