Homer in Iberian-American Culture and Literature
This book adds to an international bibliography specialised on the reception of Homer, including studies on Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian and Argentinian authors (from the 19th to the 21st century) articulated by a common perspective, Homeric motifs, and differentiated by literary genre, that is, theatre, poetry, novel, and short story. Well-known and lesser-known names from the literatures being analysed also contribute to the novelty of the set. The contributors are researchers from each of the countries with a specific and well-informed vision of each context. Organising the volume according to these genres encourages historical and cultural comparisons of countries with a long tradition in common. Each analysis is always framed within its cultural context. Due to its characteristics, this volume serves an audience with different expectations, related to Classical Studies, Literary Theory and Portuguese and Spanish Language Literatures, Theatrical Studies, History of Culture, and Postcolonial Studies.
Brazilian Geography
This book presents the history and theoretical contributions of Brazilian geography since the late twentieth century and shows how this sphere of knowledge has been organically integrated with social and territorial issues and with social movements. The relationship between the subjects and objects of research in Brazilian geography has been centred on the understanding and transformation of realities marked by injustice and inequality. Against this backdrop, the geography of the country has developed by integrating, relating to, and forming part of those realities as it headed out into the streets. Brazilian geography continues to hold theoretical debate in high regard as a result of the influence of critical theory. This book thus covers the theoretical approaches in Brazilian geography, its different lines of research, and above all its character as manifested in culture and society.
The Post-colonial Literature of Lusophone Africa
This work examines the Portuguese and crioulo literatures of the five African Portuguese-speaking countries: Angola; Cape Verde; Guinea Bissau; Mozambique; and Sao Tome and Principe. It offers an introduction to the cultural and historical context within which literature developed in Lusophone Africa, as well as a discussion of the prose and poetry published by the writers from these five countries since independence. As such, the volume is intended not only as a textbook for the student of the literatures of the five Lusophone countries, but also as a cultural and intellectual foundation for the specialist reader with an interest in the former Portuguese colonial empire.
