Acting the Right Part

Acting the Right Part is a cultural history of huaju (modern Chinese drama) from 1966 to 1996. Xiaomei Chen situates her study both in the context of Chinese literary and cultural history and in the context of comparative drama and theater, cultural studies, and critical issues relevant to national theater worldwide. Following a discussion of the marginality of modern Chinese drama in relation to other genres, periods, and cultures, early chapters focus on the dynamic relationship between theater and revolution. Chosen during the Cultural Revolution as the exclusive artistic vehicle to promote proletariat art, "model theater" raises important questions about the complex relationships between women, memory, nation/state, revolution, and visual culture. Throughout this study, Chen argues that dramatic norms inform both theatrical performance and everyday political behavior in contemporary China.

Between Tradition and Change

This book explores the reasons for adopting a hermeneutical version of reception theory in discussing modern Chinese culture. Between Tradition and Change is centered around the contributions of Hu Shi, Lu Xun, and Mao Dun to May Fourth Literature. It employs literary theory (hermeneutics) in order to clarify the meaning of cultural change, instead of merely offering a history of May Fourth culture or a discussion of representative figures.Contents: Preface; Acknowledgments; May Fourth Literature Between Past and Present; Problems in May Fourth Interpretation; Hermeneutics and Chinese Literary History; Reception Theory and the May Fourth Reader; The Formation of the Reader in Hu Shi, Lu Xun, and Mao Dun; May Fourth Literature and Dialogue East/West; Notes; Bibliography.

Reporting new and never-before-published information about the assassination of John F. Kennedy, this investigation dives straight into the deep end, and seeks to prove the CIA’s involvement in one of the most controversial topics in American history. Featuring intelligence gathered from CIA agents who reported their involvement in the assassination, the case is broken wide open while covering unexplored ground. Gritty details about the assassination are interlaced throughout, while primary and secondary players to the murder are revealed in the in-depth analysis. Although a tremendous amount has been written in the nearly five decades since the assassination, there has never been, until now, a publication to explore the aspects of the case that seemed to defy explanation or logic.
