The aim of this volume is to present the best work of the social anthropologist, Edwin Ardener, which until now is unpublished or scattered in various publications. These papers demonstrate how social anthropology and linguistics are transformed by their mutual contact.
The book is a collection of papers. "Belief and the Problem of Women" (Edwin Ardener) was first presented in 1968 and published in 1972.' Some of the other papers developed out of an informal women's seminar in Oxford; all of them were designed for an unofficial session of the Association of Social Anthropologists' Decennial Conference in 1973. From this background comes a volume with unusual collective weight and coherence. The initial paper was clearly a fruitful impetus, and the other contributors have sometimes actualized some of its hypotheses as well as developing them critically. Shirley Ardener's thoughtful Introduction is of characteristic lucidity and careful courtesy. Perhaps modesty hampered her in applying the insights of her own paper, which seeks common features in different female self- models, and a common solution to the problems of articulating them, to the work of her fellow contributors (including her husband, for whose general theoretical position she provides an illuminating gloss). -- From http://www.jstor.org (Sep. 23, 2016).
The Bakweri people of Mount Cameroon, an active volcano on the coast of West Africa a few degrees north of the equator, have had a varied and at times exciting history which has brought them into contact, not only with other West African peoples, but with merchants, missionaries, soldiers and administrators from Portugal, Holland, England, Jamaica, Sweden, Germany and more recently France. Edwin Ardener, the distinguished social anthropologist who spoke their language, wrote a number of studies on the culture and history of the Bakweri kingdom. Some unpublished writings, and some published but now out of print materials are here brought together for the first time. The book covers the early contacts with the Portuguese and Dutch from the seventeenth century, the arrival of the missionaries in the nineteenth century, the dramatic defeat of the first German punitive expedition, the subsequent establishment by the Germans of the plantation system, and the British Trusteeship period until independence in 1961 as part of the Federal Republic of Cameroon.

This is a timely and comprehensive study combining various critical approaches to the fiction of Buchi Emecheta, one of Africa's most illustrious and contentious women writers. Feminist (Showalter, Cixous, Kristeva) and postcolonial approaches (writing back) are taken to Emecheta's texts to illuminate the personal, political and aesthetic ramifications of the production of this "born writer." Poststructural programmes of analysis are shown to be less relevant to this writer's fiction than Marxist and Bakhtinian perspectives. Emecheta is shown to be a bridge-builder between two cultures and two worlds in narratives (both challenging and popular) characterized by ambiguity, ambivalence and double-voiced discourse, all of which evince the writer's determination to expose imaginatively the colonial heritage of centre-periphery conflicts, cultural corruption, ethnic discrimination, gender oppression, and the migrant experience in multiracial communities.
