On a hot and dusty December day in 1980, the bodies of four American women-three of them Catholic nuns-were pulled from a hastily dug grave in a field outside San Salvador. They had been murdered two nights before by the US-trained El Salvadoran military. News of the killing shocked the American public and set off a decade of debate over Cold War policy in Latin America. The women themselves became symbols and martyrs, shorn of context and background. In A Radical Faith, journalist Eileen Markey breathes life back into one of these women, Sister Maura Clarke. Who was this woman in the dirt? What led her to this vicious death so far from home? Maura was raised in a tight-knit Irish immigrant ...

Following two broken marriages and her mother's suicide, Jane came into the happiest time of her life with a new love -- only to have it end tragically. Her death certificate states that she died of "metastatic carcinoma of unknown primary" -- medical lingo for a cancer whose source remains a mystery. That explanation fails to reveal how Jane was placed in harm's way by health-care practitioners who belittle one another's valuable skills, refuse to cooperate, misdiagnose (or make no attempt to diagnose), and who believe that their treatment plan is the only plan, thereby putting the patient at risk. This poignant story, told through Jane's private journals by her author husband, is a cautionary tale for everyone caught in the crossfire of America's medical "cold war." Book jacket.

Yorktown and Nordheim

Founded 7 miles apart in south central Texas, Yorktown and Nordheim were settled by German immigrants. These immigrants found the rolling hills and grassland full of oak trees suitable for settlement, and the rich soil helped to make farming a way of life. Yorktown was settled near the Coleto Creek as a rest stop along the Indianola Trail for teamsters delivering freight to New Braunfels. Nordheim was settled because it was a high point and beacon for settlers, and it continued to grow when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad was built. As the towns grew, so did the businesses and churches. The settlers shared a love of music, and bands came together to perform at various functions. On Saturdays the farmers, their families, and hired help would come to buy supplies, visit friends, and enjoy a day away from work. Today the spirit of community is still strong, as citizens put together annual celebrations and activities that promote tourism and help to maintain local pride.
