Inspired by Critical Theory, Panayota Gounari masterfully uses Critical Discourse Studies to analyze social media data and articulate a discursive, pedagogical and historical project.
This volume explores how linguistic and cultural diversity in Greece, caused by various waves of emigration and immigration, has transformed Greek society and its educational system. It examines the country’s current linguistic diversity, which is characterised by the languages of immigrants, repatriates, refugees, Roma, Muslim minorities, and Pomaks as well as linguistic varieties and dialects; and how schools and the state have designed and implemented programmes to deal with the significant educational challenges posed by these culturally and linguistically diverse groups. In this regard, the book takes into account the nature and evolution of Greek society; Greece’s traditional role as a labour-exporting country with a long history of migration to other countries; and major political, economic and social developments, such as the collapse of communism, the opening of borders in Eastern Europe, and the influx of immigrants from Muslim countries.

As a result of the massive refugee flows in 2015-2016, more than 50,000 refugees and asylum seekers were stranded in Greece, awaiting decisions regarding their status. Meanwhile, the Greek state itself was completely unprepared to provide shelter and education to these populations. This collection of papers presents educational initiatives undertaken by both official and unofficial agencies in order to provide Greek language courses to refugee students of various ages. The studies presented here highlight various challenges such as the teachers’ inexperience and lack of material and infrastructure, the students’ diversity in terms of ethnic, social and educational background, and their lack of motivation and sense of stability. Moreover, the contributions here point to the importance of adopting innovative and holistic approaches to teaching refugee populations. Such approaches take into account their linguistic and cultural capital, as well as the need to empower them through the learning process. This volume will be of interest to researchers, policy makers and practitioners involved in refugee education in Europe and beyond.
Inclusive Education: Definition and Conceptual Framework is a recourse for the readers who would like to learn more about the background of inclusion and diversity in higher education in Flanders, Germany, Greece, Poland, Turkiye and the UK. This edited collection challenges the perceptions of disciplinary, linguistic, geographical and ideological borders that run across language education. By highlighting commonalities and tracing connections between diverse sub-fields that have traditionally been studied separately, the book shows how the perspectives of practitioners and researchers working in diverse areas of language education can mutually inform each other.
