Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Project-Based Learning are teaching methods based on principles of student-centred learning, which target an interdisciplinary engineering curriculum. The transition from strictly traditional approaches in engineering education represents significant opportunities for change.

Logic Program Synthesis from Incomplete Information

Logic Program Synthesis from Incomplete Information

Program synthesis is a solution to the software crisis. If we had a program that develops correct programs from specifications, then program validation and maintenance would disappear from the software life-cycle, and one could focus on the more creative tasks of specification elaboration, validation, and maintenance, because replay of program development would be less costly. This monograph describes a novel approach to Inductive Logic Programming (ILP), which cross-fertilizes logic programming and machine learning. Aiming at the synthesis of recursive logic programs only, and this from incomplete information, we take a software engineering approach that is more appropriate than a pure artificial intelligence approach. This book is suitable as a secondary text for graduate level courses in software engineering and artificial intelligence, and as a reference for practitioners of program synthesis.

ZEUS (Centres of European Supercomputing) is a network for information exchange and co-operation between European Supercomputer Centres. During the fall of 1994 the idea was put forward to start an annual workshop to stimulate the exchange of ideas and experience in parallel programming and computing between researchers and users from industry and academia. The first workshop in this series, the ZEUS '95 Workshop on Parallel Programming and Computation, is organized at Linkoping University, where the Swedish ZEUS centre, NSC (National Supercomputer Centre) is located. This is open for all researchers and users in the field of parallel computing.

Foundations of Data Organization and Algorithms

The Third International Conference on Foundations of Data Organization and Algorithms has been organized by INRIA in Paris from June 21 to 23, 1989. Previous FODO Conferences were held in Warsaw, 1981, and in Kyoto, 1985. The goal of this year's conference is to present advances in techniques of permanent and temporary data organization in different fields. New applications such as image processing, graphics, geographic data processing, robotics, office automation, information systems, language translation, and expert systems have developed various data organizations and algorithms specific to the application requirements. The growing importance of these applications has created a need for general studies on data organization and algorithms as well as for specific studies on new database management systems and on filing services. The articles submitted for the conference were subject to the usual rigorous reviewing process and selected on that basis. They offer an excellent snapshot of the state of the art in the field and should prove invaluable for computer scientists faced by the problems of data organization which are raised by these new applications.

Abstract Compositional Analysis of Iterated Relations

This self-contained monograph is an integrated study of generic systems defined by iterated relations using the two paradigms of abstraction and composition. This accommodates the complexity of some state-transition systems and improves understanding of complex or chaotic phenomena emerging in some dynamical systems. The main insights and results of this work concern a structural form of complexity obtained by composition of simple interacting systems representing opposed attracting behaviors. This complexity is expressed in the evolution of composed systems (their dynamics) and in the relations between their initial and final states (the computation they realize). The theoretical results are validated by analyzing dynamical and computational properties of low-dimensional prototypes of chaotic systems, high-dimensional spatiotemporally complex systems, and formal systems.

Teaching the science and the technology of programming as a unified discipline that shows the deep relationships between programming paradigms. This innovative text presents computer programming as a unified discipline in a way that is both practical and scientifically sound. The book focuses on techniques of lasting value and explains them precisely in terms of a simple abstract machine. The book presents all major programming paradigms in a uniform framework that shows their deep relationships and how and where to use them together. After an introduction to programming concepts, the book presents both well-known and lesser-known computation models ("programming paradigms"). Each model has ...

Several aspects of informatics curricula and teaching methods at the university level are reported in this volume, including: *Challenges in defining an international curriculum; *The diversity in informatics curricula; *Computing programs for scientists and engineers; *Patterns of curriculum design; *Student interaction; *Teaching of programming; *Peer review in education. This book contains a selection of the papers presented at the Working Conference on Informatics Curricula, Teaching Methods and Best Practice (ICTEM 2002), which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 3.2, and held in Florianópolis, Brazil in July 2002. The working groups were organized in three parallel tracks. Working Group 1 discussed the "Directions and Challenges in Informatics Education". The focus of Working Group 2 was "Teaching Programming and Problem Solving". Working Group 3 discussed "Computing: The Shape of an Evolving Discipline."
