Gendoping

Ethnosport

The study known as 'Ethnosport' describes the cultural diversity, identity, and folk traditions in sports, with special reference to Eastern cultures. A rich world - of games, competitions, rituals, and festivities - opens when examining Russia as well as the minority peoples' cultures of Siberia, Central Asia, and East Asia. This book encourages research in similar, living, folk-sport traditions in further regions of the world. It contributes to the understanding of bodily democracy as people's self-determination in bodily practice. Time, Duration and Change

This book studies various perspectives in the history of European philosophy on the relationship between time and movement. Ever since the pre-Socratic thinker Zeno of Elea linked time and space to understand bodily movement, his so-called paradoxes of motion have remained unsolved. One of his most important critics, the French philosopher Henri Bergson, criticized the usual connection between time and space and established a new way of understanding time as duration (durée). Whereas Zeno presented an objectivist understanding of time, Bergson emphasized its subjectivist meaning. Both contradictory positions seem incompatible, referring to pure intellect (Zeno) on the one hand or pure sensa...

The Adventures of Transcendental Philosophy

Karl-Otto Apel is one of the most important German philosophers of the 20th century, and is finally coming to be recognized as such. However, his work is still poorly understood and inadequately treated throughout most of the world. In The Adventures of Transcendental Philosophy, critical theory scholar Eduardo Mendieta examines the philosophical origins of discourse ethics through the prism of Apel's thought. Mendieta finds that Apel fundamentally transformed German philosophy, which had become stagnant in the years before World War II, and deeply influenced later thinkers such as J rgen Habermas. Apel's turn toward pragmatism and analytic philosophy helped him bring the concept of a linguistic paradigm shift to Germany.

Sportsmanship is a broad concept: ethics, fairness, honor and self-control. Some people find it difficult to define what makes a "good sport," but state "I know one when I see one." This collection of new essays brings together the work of more than two dozen contributors from around the world who teach sportsmanship in a range of academic disciplines including sociology, psychology, economics, education, kinesiology and applied athletics. Topics include the moral ambiguities of cheating; recreation in prison; ethics and character formation; coaching perspectives; gender; race; and the portrayal of sportsmanship in film. "This volume provides an analysis of the nature of competition in contemporary American sport. This work traces American sport from American culture to the influence of the 1960s counterculture and the resulting rise of a post-Cold War ethos that continues to reinterpret competitiveness as a relic of a misbegotten past and anathema to American life"--Provided by publisher.
