Hubert Crackanthorpe (1870-1896) made a critically significant contribution to the evolution of the modernist short story in Britain. His unexplained death in Paris at the age of 26 cut short a highly promising literary career. Different Voices
The concept of the "human" has been broadly re-visited and modified, and the term "posthuman" has now become a term of continuous inquiry. Gender (representations) play(s) a critical role in works of literature, culture, and art, and focusing on gender is crucial to uncovering the anthropocentrism or androcentrism that may underlie the work and the times to which it belongs. While maintaining a solid literary emphasis, the ten chapters included in this volume focus on feminist debates about women, technology, and the body, on gender representation and the posthuman, on post-gender figurations, on gender and trans/post/humanism, biotechnology/biopolitics/bioethics, on feminist posthumanism, on animals, the human-machine, and ecological posthumanism. The aim of the volume is to analyse how useful these concepts may be for thinking about the subject, its definition and identity in a changing society.

The crown upon the continuing vitality and popularity of Gissing studies in the final decade of the twentieth century was the publication of The Collected Letters of George Gissing (1990-97). Critical Dialogues in the Medical Humanities
This volume illustrates ongoing discussions in and about the medical humanities with studies on different approaches to the relationship between medical science and practice and the humanities, including reflections based on fiction, art, history, socio-economic and political concerns, architecture and natural landscapes. The book explores the ways in which healthcare and medical practice can be positively influenced by removing the focus from the technical knowledge of the medical practitioner. It offers innovative perspectives on spaces for healing, traces attitudes and beliefs in relation to illnesses and their treatment throughout history (including intimations of the future), and interrogates cultural attitudes to illness, doctoring and patients through the lens of fiction. Based on the premise that more interdisciplinary work between medical and non-medical professionals is needed, the chapters contained in this volume contribute to an ongoing dialogue between medicine and the humanities that continues to enrich both disciplines.
Perspectives on Ecocriticism
This volume gathers together papers presented at the conference “Ecocriticism in the Nordic Countries; Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” held in Västerås, Sweden, in 2017, organized by the research group Ecocritical Forum at Mälardalen University. The conference, which was an attempt to survey local ecocritical activities, transcended Nordic boundaries, engaging scholars from Europe and the United States. This expansion from the local to the global mirrors the subject of the conference: ecocriticism, a cross-disciplinary field of research in the intersection of environmental issues and cultural expressions. The chapters here engage with topical issues such as the Anthropocene, sustainability in education, and civilizational critique, as well as schools of thought such as materialism, dark ecology and animal studies. The contributions discuss several types of cultural expressions, including film and other visual media, university course design and Nordic, and English language novels and poetry. This volume will attract the interest of readers from a number of different backgrounds, both in the Nordic countries and internationally.
Crisis in Contemporary British Fiction
This collection of critical essays explores how contemporary British authors engage with the theme of crisis in their fiction. Of interest to scholars and students of literary and cultural studies, this volume investigates crisis as a complex phenomenon: not only as a cultural concept involving sociopolitical systems but also as a mode of challenge to established power structures and modes of representation across narrative traditions. Through the examination of a variety of leading authors such as Kazuo Ishiguro, and award-winning texts like Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending (2011), this collection foregrounds the theme of crisis as a critical commonality emerging among vastly different stylistic expressions of local and global concerns. Bringing together a variety of scholars from Germany, Italy, Greece, the UK and the US, this collection provides diverse disciplinary perspectives and highlights the significance of social and ethical concerns in contemporary British fiction through the investigation of the theme of crisis.
George Gissing and the Place of Realism
This collection explores Gissing’s place in the narrative of fin-de-siècle literature. Together, chapters here theorise how late-Victorian spatial and generic norms are confronted, explored and performed in Gissing’s works. In addition to presenting new readings of the major novels and introducing readers to lesser-known works, the collection advocates Gissing’s importance as a journalist, short story, and travel writer. It also recognises Gissing as a central proponent in the late-Victorian realism debate. The book, like today’s nineteenth-century studies, is interdisciplinary. It includes familiar interpretive approaches—biographical, historicist, and comparative—together with fresh perspectives informed by ecocriticism, materiality, and cultural performance. In addition, it is markedly comparative in scope. Gissing is read alongside familiar authors like Dickens, Ruskin, and Hardy, but also, and more unusually, Nietzsche, Besant, Freud and Foucault. Collectively, these chapters illustrate that Gissing, though attentive to contemporary issues, is neither uncomplicatedly realist nor are his writings uncomplicated historical records of place.
