Multidisciplinary Approaches to The FLASH Radiotherapy

Multidisciplinary Approaches to The FLASH Radiotherapy

Radiotherapy (RT) is a cornerstone of cancer treatment, being routinely used for approximately half of cancer patients in high-income countries. Despite the extensive use of RT for over 60 years, its toxicity on normal tissues often limits the treatment of radioresistant tumors and is responsible for significant decrease in patient’s quality of life. However, it was recently established that ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) irradiation induces significantly less normal tissues toxicities, while keeping similar antitumor effect compared to conventional dose rate irradiation. This so called “FLASH Effect" was demonstrated in vivo on different animal models and different organs by delivering the total amount of radiation dose in a very short time ( usually <200 ms), with average dose rates above 40 Gy/s and with different particles including electrons, protons and photons.

This book explores the current difficulties and unsolved problems in the field of particle therapy and, after analysing them, discusses how (and if) innovative Monte Carlo approaches can be used to solve them. Each book chapter is dedicated to a different sub-discipline, including multi-ion treatments, flash-radiotherapy, laser-accelerated beams, nanoparticles effects, binary reactions to enhance radiobiology, and space-related issues. This is the first book able to provide a comprehensive insight into this exciting field and the growing use of Monte Carlo in medical physics. It will be of interest to graduate students in medicine and medical physics, in addition to researchers and clinical ...

The Woman Who Married the Bear

Stories of the primordial woman who married a bear, appear in matriarchal traditions across the global North from Indigenous North America and Scandinavia to Russia and Korea. In The Woman Who Married the Bear, authors Barbara Alice Mann, a scholar of Indigenous American culture, and Kaarina Kailo, who specializes in the cultures of Northern Europe, join forces to examine these Woman-Bear stories, their common elements, and their meanings in the context of matriarchal culture. The authors reach back 35,000 years to tease out different threads of Indigenous Woman-Bear traditions, using the lens of bear spirituality to uncover the ancient matriarchies found in rock art, caves, ceremonies, ritu...

This book provides a unique and comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art understanding of the molecular and nano-scale processes that play significant roles in ion-beam cancer therapy. It covers experimental design and methodology, and reviews the theoretical understanding of the processes involved. It offers the reader an opportunity to learn from a coherent approach about the physics, chemistry and biology relevant to ion-beam cancer therapy, a growing field of important medical application worldwide. The book describes phenomena occurring on different time and energy scales relevant to the radiation damage of biological targets and ion-beam cancer therapy from the molecular (nano) scale...

Transport of Energetic Electrons in Solids

This book describes the computational methods most frequently used to deal with the interaction of charged particles, notably electrons, with condensed matter. Both elastic and inelastic scattering phenomena are discussed, and methods for calculating the relevant cross sections are explained in a rigorous but simple way. It provides readers with all the information they need in order to write their own Monte Carlo code and to simulate the transport of fast particles in condensed matter. Many numerical and experimental examples are presented throughout the book. The updated and extended fourth edition features ab initio methods for calculating dielectric function and energy loss function. Non...
