He was airborne at 11 a.m. and set course in Spitfire PR XI for the French coast, passing over London at 15,000 feet. The weather was perfect over the English Channel and Storey flew to Dunkirk and set course for Abbeville. Fifty miles before reaching the objective, he was targeted by an accurate German anti-aircraft battery, and he occasionally rolled the Spitfire on her side to check beneath him.

he 20th century saw air power transformed from novelists' fantasy into stark reality. From string and canvas to precision weaponry and stealth, air power has progressed to become not only the weapon of first political choice, but often the only conceivable option. This rapid development has given rise to considerable debate and controversy with those holding entrenched views rarely slow to shout their case. Many myths have grown over the period, ranging from the once much vaunted ability of air power to win wars alone through to its impact as a coercive tool. This volume examines the theory and practice of air power from its earliest inception. Enlisting with the RAF at the start of World War 2, he had no sooner got his ?wings? than he was plunged into the thick of battle after being effectively kidnapped by a Malta-based squadron to help fight off German attackers during the notorious siege of the island. After the war, having received a Distinguished Flying Medal, Leslie became a test pilot, taking part in attempts to break the air speed record. He then turned his skills to a new invention, the hovercraft, testing early prototypes and taking charge of the world?s first regular passenger service in 1962.
