Pax Novis

Cira Antares is deeply loyal to two things: Pax Novis—the cargo ship captained by her mother that transports supplies across war-torn star systems—and her personal mission to save war orphans. But hiding them as stowaways on the ship is illegal, and if any of them were found, not even her mother could protect Cira from the consequences. She has successfully kept her secret...until supplies start to go missing. Food. Clothing. Tools. All signs point to her stowaways, but they wouldn’t do anything to risk exposing themselves—or her. Especially not Riston, the oldest of the group and someone Cira has grown close to. Someone she might even be falling in love with... And petty thefts are only the beginning—whole ships are disappearing now. Not caught in a firefight. Not destroyed by another planet. Vanishing. Without a trace. And Pax Novis is next.

The nameless narrator first appears to fit the stereotype of a meticulous killer untroubled by normal emotions. He researched 18-year-old Sarah Abbott, who was taking a year off from school before heading to Oxford, killed her in her house, and carefully cleaned up afterward. On returning to his van, however, he discovers that he has locked its keys inside. A brick through the van's window solves that problem, but later, back at the victim's house, he runs into a friend of Sarah's, Erica Shaw, who winds up in a cage in the basement of the narrator's garage. His bumbling continues throughout. In a big departure from the standard serial killer trope, he begins nonpredatory relationships with three different women. He even falls in love with one of them. Those who have no trouble accepting a humanized serial killer will be most satisfied.

Loyalty and Lies

Sometimes you hit rock bottom and then discover a whole new level of suck. Moving to California last year was supposed to distance Axl Derringer from the drinking, drugs, and dangerous friends he left in Chicago after they landed him handcuffed to a hospital bed. It worked until Homecoming night when he broke his sobriety and blacked out. One month later, Axl’s girlfriend Gloria tells him she’s pregnant, that he’s the father, and that it happened on the one night he can’t remember. And it's all downhill from there: mandatory AA meetings, visits to his probation officer, and dealing with the stress of Gloria’s vicious rumors, plus a visit from his Chicago friends. To top it all off, he's forced into a project partnership with Gloria’s best friend Rory, a girl who kind of wants to kill him. A paternity suit, betrayals of trust, insurmountable loss—it’s basically the senior year from hell. After a while Axl starts to believe that not even proving that Gloria is lying will be enough to put his life back together again. But then hope appears from one of the last places he expects and he realizes he may finally be ready to trust someone with his heart.

In this heartwarming essay collection, dozens of authors, actors, artists and others imagine one last lunch with someone they cherished. A few years ago, Erica Heller realized how universal the longing is for one more moment with a lost loved one. It could be a parent, a sibling, a mentor, or a friend, but who wouldn’t love the opportunity to sit down, break bread, and just talk? Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to ask those unasked questions, or share those unvoiced feelings? In One Last Lunch, Heller has asked friends and family of authors, artists, musicians, comedians, actors, and others, to recount one such fantastic repast. Muffie Meyer and her documentary subject Little Edie Beale go to a deli in Montreal. Kirk Douglas asks his father what he thought of him becoming an actor. Sara Moulton dines with her friend Julia Child. The Anglican priest George Pitcher has lunch with Jesus. And Heller herself connects with her father, the renowned author Joseph Heller. These richly imagined stories are endlessly revealing, about the subject, the writer, the passage of time, regret, gratitude, and the power of enduring love.
