What Happened to the Battleship

In the hundreds of books written about battleships, the authors tend to draw down the curtain on the careers of these great vessels in September 1945, with the surrender of Japan. Yet, on that day some ninety-eight battleships or ex-battleships might be spotted around the world, and eleven of them were in or around Tokyo Bay for the surrender itself. What happened to all those ships? This new book takes a fresh look at the slow demise of the battleship. It examines the decisions made by the major world powers after 1945, and their aspirations to retain battleships in their navies, despite financial stringency. It places the history and role of battleships after 1945 in their geo-political co...

Author Malcolm Bruce has six novels to his credit, all based in or around Scarborough. In the mid-seventies he worked at the Naval Ordnance Establishment in Sheffield from where he learned of an amazing connection between the ships of the German High Seas Fleet of the First World War and our lives today. This is his first factual book about the Scarborough bombardment and is the written version of a talk he's been doing for the last eighteen months. In this slim volume he explains the connection, and hopefully puts forward a realistic theory, about the number of 'dud' shells fired into Scarborough during the bombardment of 1914. Malcolm takes us on through the internment of the German fleet at Scapa Flow in 1919 and what happened afterwards, bringing the story right up to today.

Here is a comprehensive accounting of all United States and allied submarine attacks on the Japanese for which success was claimed or occurred. The expanded coverage focuses on successes by U.S. and British and Dutch submarines in the Pacific and Indian oceans, Soviet submarines, and losses caused by mines laid by submarines. The book also includes details from top-secret "Ultra" messages decoded during the war and recently translated documents that provide correct Japanese ship names, ship type and tonnage, convoy names, human loss numbers and other attack details, as well as a military evaluation of each attack.
