Plasma membrane-associated channels known as gap junctions, along with their protein building blocks-connexins-have an important functional role in a range of immunological processes. This book assembles and synthesizes four decades of the most important research carried out in this field. The chapters focus on the latest progress made on translating the knowledge gained to specific treatment modalities, including approaches for reducing scarring and cardiac arrhythmia, combating inflammation in the central nervous system and enhancing epithelial tissue repair. The book will inform and update specialists, clinical practitioners and those studying the potential for commercial applications.
The definitive guide to peptidomics- a hands-on lab reference The first truly comprehensive book about peptidomics for protein and peptide analysis, this reference provides a detailed description of the hows and whys of peptidomics and how the techniques have evolved. With chapters contributed by leading experts, it covers naturally occurring peptides, peptidomics methods and new developments, and the peptidomics approach to biomarker discovery. Explaining both the principles and the applications, Peptidomics: Methods and Applications: * Features examples of applications in diverse fields, including pharmaceutical science, toxicity biomarkers, and neuroscience * Details the successful peptid...
Development of new-generation vaccines is now more challenging than ever, as identifying, purifying and evaluating vaccine antigens is a complex undertaking. Most importantly, once the relevant antigens have been identified, key focus then shifts to the development of suitable delivery systems and formulations to achieve maximum in vivo potency with minimum potential side effects. These novel formulations—many of which will be nanoparticulates—can deliver the antigens to the desired site, to the relevant antigen presenting cells, and prevent systemic exposure of the immune potentiators. The proposed book will outline all the critical steps that need to be considered for successful development of various types of nanoparticulate delivery systems for vaccine antigens. These contributions from leading experts in the area of vaccine formulation and delivery systems will tie in what is the most current status, including clinical evaluations with these novel vaccine technologies.
Novel Approaches and Strategies for Biologics, Vaccines and Cancer Therapies takes a look at the current strategies, successes and challenges involved with the development of novel formulations of biologics, vaccines and cancer therapy. This thorough reference on the latest trends in the development of diverse modalities will appeal to a broad community of scientists, students and clinicians. Written by leading authors across academia and industry, this book covers important topics such as unique drug delivery devices, non-parenteral delivery trends, novel approaches to the treatment of cancer, immunotherapy and more. It includes real-world cases and examples which highlight formulations wit...

This volume describes protocols for basic state-of-the-art approaches in the field of peptidomics. Most of these approaches are independent of the instruments used for analysis and can easily be adapted for equipment that is available in a typical proteomics facility. Chapters detail many of the basic techniques used to detect and identify peptides, methods for the relative quantitation of peptides between samples using isotopic labels or label-free approaches, and biological species as well as sample types. Written in the highly successful format of the Methods in Molecular Biology series, each chapter includes an introduction to the topic, a list of the necessary materials and reagents, reproducible step-by-step laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting common problems and avoiding pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Peptidomics: Methods and Strategies provides useful guidance for studies in the rapidly growing field of peptidomics.
This work is concerned with a group of proteins which were originally consid ered to be an esoteric phenomenon but which have now been shown to play critical roles both in normal and stressed cells as well as being involved in a variety of human diseases. It is the purpose of this work to give a comprehen sive view of these proteins and their various aspects. After an introductory chapter providing an overview of these proteins, the work is divided into four main sections each of which deals with one important aspect of these proteins. Thus, the first section contains a series of chapters which describe individual stress proteins and their roles in particular biological phenomena. Evidently, the induction of these proteins by elevated tempera ture or other stresses is their defining feature and the second section of this book therefore considers the regulation of stress protein gene expression both by stressful stimuli such as elevated temperature or ischaemia and by non stressful stimuli such as cytokines.
Plasma membrane-associated channels known as gap junctions, along with their protein building blocks—connexins—have an important functional role in a range of immunological processes, including heart function, cell growth and specialization, and early development. Spanning basic science and potential clinical applications, Connexin Cell Communication Channels: Roles in the Immune System and Immunopathology assembles and synthesizes four decades of the most important research carried out in this field. The book first provides a historical overview of the discovery of these membrane channels in cells and tissues of the immune system. It describes their general molecular and biological char...
