Communities, Landscapes, and Interaction in Neolithic Greece

The last three decades have witnessed a period of growing archaeological activity in Greece that have enhanced our awareness of the diversity and variability of ancient communities. New sites offer rich datasets from many aspects of material culture that challenge traditional perceptions and suggest complex interpretations of the past. This volume provides a synthetic overview of recent developments in the study of Neolithic Greece and reconsiders the dynamics of human-environment interactions while recording the growing diversity in layers of social organization. It fills an essential lacuna in contemporary literature and enhances our understanding of the Neolithic communities in the Greek Peninsula.

Magóula Pavlína is located in the Soúrpi plain in Thessalía. The site was inhabited during the Early and Middle Bronze Age. A survey at the site was carried out in 1996 after the field was ploughed for the first time. The recovery of tableware – including many fragments of Grey Minyan – grinding and pounding tools, saddle querns and animal remains show that Magoúla Pavlína was not a temporary site for special activities, but a permanent settlement. Even though these artefacts and the animal remains are from a non-stratified context, this publication of the material is of importance, as relatively little is known of this period in Thessalía, especially compared to southern Greece.

A careful application of Karl Polanyi's approach to the economies and communities of ancient peoples. Robert Kuttner, in the New York Times Book Review, February 28, 1999, observed that even those on the right have taken up criticism of undermanaged and unrestrained global capitalism. He concluded: "The seminal work in this tradition is Karl Polanyi's 1944 masterpiece, The Great Transformation, which is overdue for rediscovery." Stretching from the Mycenaean Greeks of the second millennium to the Athenians of the fourth century B.C.E., this volume features the work of prominent scholars in the fields of classics, history, and archaeology. The essays stem from the International Karl Polanyi C...
