The Expert Witness in Islamic Courts
Islam’s tense relationship with modernity is one of the most crucial issues of our time. Within Islamic legal systems, with their traditional preference for eyewitness testimony, this struggle has played a significant role in attitudes toward expert witnesses. Utilizing a uniquely comparative approach, Ron Shaham here examines the evolution of the role of such witnesses in a number of Arab countries from the premodern period to the present. Shaham begins with a history of expert testimony in medieval Islamic culture, analyzing the different roles played by male experts, especially physicians and architects, and females, particularly midwives. From there, he focuses on the case of Egypt, tracing the country’s reform of its traditional legal system along European lines beginning in the late nineteenth century. Returning to a broader perspective, Shaham draws on a variety of legal and historical sources to place the phenomenon of expert testimony in cultural context. A truly comprehensive resource, The Expert Witness in Islamic Courts will be sought out by a broad spectrum of scholars working in history, religion, gender studies, and law.

Prospects for productive use of saline water in West Asia and North Africa
This study of the potential to use saline water for irrigation in Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Tunisia concludes that it is technically feasible but its economic viability remains to be established. Expert opinion suggests that saline irrigated agriculture is most likely to succeed in the West Asia/North Africa region as a complement to small-scale mixed livestock and cropping farming systems. Precise quantification of the available saline water resources is not possible because of the lack of hard data. As a result, precise quantification of the likely impact of introducing saline irrigated agriculture on poverty alleviation and food security is also impossible, although anecdotal evidence suggests that this would be positive. The report argues that the environmental effects of saline irrigated agriculture--both positive and negative--need to be integrated into policies and decisions on the use of saline water. Uses other than agricultural (for example, amenity uses, industrial, landscaping, carbon sequestration or biomass production for energy) also need to be considered, and may be more socially and economically beneficial.

TUJAI PADA PROSESI ADAT PERKAWINAN MASYARAKAT SUWAWA
Buku ini berisi tentang pemaparan tujai melalui analisis wacana kritis berdasarkan hasil penelitian yang telah dilakukan. Hal ini didasarkan para beberapa pertimbangan. Pertama, wacana tujai pada prosesi adat perkawinan masyarakat Suwawa Provinsi Gorontalo telah meluas dan merakyat daripada tiga prosesi adat lainnya yang hanya berlaku bagi mereka yang tergabung dalam unsur Buwatulo Tolu no Bunga. Di samping itu apa, bagaimana, dan untuk apa penuturan wacana tujai pada prosesi adat perkawinan itu belum diketahui dan dipahami secara mendalam oleh pemiliknya (masyarakatnya). Kedua, prosesi adat perkawinan waktunya hampir setiap bulan, kecuali bulan Ramadlan, Djumadil awal, dan Djumadil Akhir, sedangkan ketiga prosesi adat lainnya waktunya tidak menentu dan belum pasti (tergantung pada tamu yang disambut, pejabat yang dilantik, dan unsur Buwatulo Tolu no Bunga (tiga unsur pemimpin negeri) yang meninggal.
