Is it true that the 2008 financial crisis was worse than the Great Depression of 1929? Why did the Italian writer Andrea Camilleri recently claim that World War III has just started, albeit in a "soft version"? Why did a business magnate like George Soros – “the man who broke the Bank of England" – recently accuse the Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein of being“evil”? What does Italy’s PM Mario Monti, who was a Goldman Sachs international advisor for years, think of all this? And, above all, can the USA - the world’s most indebted and least competitive nation if you look at the relationship between imports and exports – come out of this crisis without engaging in a new war? Why did the US President Obama authorize sanctions targeting Iran's central bank and financial sector? Is it because Iran dared to open its own Oil Bourse trading in currencies other than the dollar? These are just some of the themes that run through this book, whose aim is to analyze the deep causes of the US and European crisis, in the context of the increasingly dangerous rise of countries like China and India.

Translation as Criticism

Themes, places, characters and voices of Elizabeth Jolley’s Mr Scobie’s Riddle are explored in detail in this monograph, which provides different narratological and translational analyses of the novel, as well as an academic translation into Italian. Considering the challenges and issues posited by a literary work’s translation helps to shed light on the original work itself. In this manner, the translation is to be seen as a further analytical instrument to gain insight into the original novel. The purpose of this work is to obtain a deeper understanding of the complicated microcosm created by Jolley in the nursing home of “St Christopher and St Jude”: the typically Australian themes of migration, isolation, place and displacement; the Australian culture-specific elements; the ensemble of curious characters and their entertaining voices. This book strives to preserve the above elements in translation as the expression of something Other, a different culture, and to take Italian readers on a journey to the Australia depicted in Mr Scobie’s Riddle so that Jolley’s characters’ voices can echo in the Italian language.

Confronting an "Axis of Cyber"?

The new US National Cyber Strategy points to Russia, China, North Korea and Iran as the main international actors responsible for launching malicious cyber and information warfare campaigns against Western interests and democratic processes. Washington made clear its intention of scaling the response to the magnitude of the threat, while actively pursuing the goal of an open, secure and global Internet. The first Report of the ISPI Center on Cybersecurity focuses on the behaviour of these “usual suspects”, investigates the security risks implicit in the mounting international confrontation in cyberspace, and highlights the current irreconcilable political cleavage between these four countries and the West in their respective approaches “in and around” cyberspace.

Responsible Business in a Changing World

This book explores the current state of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from an international perspective, the goal being to share ideas and visions for a sustainable future and to provide useful guidelines for academics, practitioners and policymakers in the context of the 2030 “Agenda for Sustainable Development” released by the United Nations. Research on CSR has evolved considerably over the last three decades. However, there are still many unanswered questions concerning the sustainability of business in an increasingly changing world, for example: If most companies consider CSR to be valuable to their organizations, why do only 15% of them systematically implement Social Responsibility initiatives? If CSR has been found to be profitable for companies, why are they so reluctant to develop an active, internal CSR policy? Why are there such significant differences in CSR adoption from country to country? Why does it take a huge crisis to make politicians react and regulate certain core CSR issues? This contributed volume answers these questions, presenting a wealth of case studies and new approaches in the process.

Festivals, Affect, and Identity

Via an ethnographic study of the community festivals of Siena Province in central Italy, 'Festivals, Affect and Identity' investigates the affective and fluid aspects of reality to establish an integrated perspective on issues of continuity and rupture, tradition and modernity, and nature and culture. Offering an illustration of the explanatory power of continental philosophy, this text demonstrates the accessibility of highly abstract critical theory when examined in relation to specific events and their detailed analysis.
