The World Sustainable Development Outlook series has been developed to provide an overview of sustainable development, to discuss why it is important and to provoke forward thinking on the development of a more coherent approach to solving global problems related to sustainability through science and technology. In doing so, a holistic approach is used to critically examine the interrelationship between the natural, governmental, economic and social dimensions of our world and how science and technology can contribute to solutions. Turkey and Malaysia, two countries on the Islamic periphery, are often not included in discussions of Islamic reassertion and identity. Yet both have been at the forefront of modernization and development, and are exposed to a rising trend of Islamic revival which discloses a deep, psychological identity crisis. In Islamic Identity and Development, Ozay Mehmet examines this identity crisis in the wider context of the Islamic dilemma of reconciling nationalism with Islam. He sees the Islamic revival primarily as a protest movement, concentrated among urban migrant settlements where uneven post-war growth has upset the traditional Islamic order. He argues that Islamic societies must move towards greater openness and an organic relationship between rulers and ruled. In particular, Mehmet suggests the need for a public policy that is not only responsive to material human needs but which also satisfies the ethical preconditions of the Islamic social contract.

The introduction of new diagnostic technologies such as Doppler technology and three-dimensional ultrasonography has changed the nature of perinatal medicine. However, the rush to introduce new procedures has sometimes compromised the rigor necessary in the initial analyses of their uses. The field is moving ahead so rapidly that health-care protocols can quickly lose their validity and controversy soon arises. Controversies in Perinatal Medicine examines the current state of the science through the lens of evidence-based medicine. With expert editorial direction and contributions from leaders in the field, the book guides readers through the maze of new technologies and procedures and explo...
