A lively and thought-provoking tour of the intertwined histories of art and walking "A broad-ranging book [that] has something for every rambler."--Benjamin Riley, New Criterion What does a walk look like? In the first book to trace the history of walking images from cave art to contemporary performance, William Chapman Sharpe reveals that a depicted walk is always more than a matter of simple steps. Whether sculpted in stone, painted on a wall, or captured on film, each detail of gait and dress, each stride and gesture has a story to tell, for every aspect of walking is shaped by social practices and environmental conditions. From classical statues to the origins of cinema, from medieval pi...

"This book is a comprehensive introduction to the works of four women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, a key protagonist of the Impressionist movement; Mary Cassatt, who had her own special role to play in the movement and was held in high esteem by fellow painter Edgar Degas; Eva Gonzales, a gifted artist and Edouard Manet's only student; and Marie Bracquemond, who abandoned painting in the interests of marital harmony." "This superbly illustrated book also contains essays by a number of writers, who besides providing a knowledgeable introduction to these four women painters, also succeed in conveying to us the context in which they worked."--BOOK JACKET.
Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was born on December 25, 1911. This book, which is devoted to the central themes of the late artist's oeuvre, is being published on the occasion of her one-hundredth birthday. It examines her life, her exploration of the works of other artists, and the transformation of her emotions into works of art. Over the course of nine chapters, characteristic works are presented in the context of art history by comparing and contrasting them with works from the Beyeler Collection. The book brings home the fact that Bourgeois not only offset the important antagonism between the figurative and the abstract in modernism, she also helped to provide a unique interpretive level to modern art beyond that of the purely visible. This publication is an introduction to the life and work of a woman who was one of the most important artists of her time.

This study is a fascinating inside look at digital type design, the rather mysterious career of one of its most important practitioners, and the history and culture of Adobe Type, with additional insight into other type designers of the digital era. It is difficult to imagine a graphic designer in the last quarter century who is not familiar with at least some of Carol Twombly's typefaces. Yet many of those who use her fonts today would be hard pressed to name their designer. Twombly studied at the Rhode Island School of Design under professor Charles Bigelow, and she also studied at the Bigelow & Holmes studio. She joined Adobe Systems in 1988, when the company was hiring young designers fo...
