The Roman Inquisition
In The Roman Inquisition: Centre versus Peripheries, two inquisitorial scholars, Black who has published on the institutional history of the Italian Inquisitions and Aron-Beller whose area of expertise are trials against Jews before the peripheral Modenese inquisition, jointly edit an essay collection that studies the relationship between the Sacred Congregation in Rome and its peripheral inquisitorial tribunals. The book analyses inquisitorial collaborations in Rome, correspondence between the Centre and its peripheries, as well as the actions of these sub-central tribunals. It discusses the extent to which the controlling tendencies of the Centre filtered down and affected the peripheries, and how the tribunals were in fact prevented by local political considerations from achieving the homogenizing effect desired by Rome.

In Living under the Evil Pope, Martina Mampieri presents the Hebrew Chronicle of Pope Paul IV, written in the second half of the sixteenth century by the Italian Jewish moneylender Benjamin Neḥemiah ben Elnathan (alias Guglielmo di Diodato) from Civitanova Marche. The text remained in manuscript for about four centuries until the Galician scholar Isaiah Sonne (1887-1960) published a Hebrew annotated edition of the chronicle in the 1930s. This book illustrates the complexity and variety of victualling systems in early modern Italy. For a long time, the historiography of urban provisioning systems in late medieval and early modern times featured a conceptual opposition between victualling administration and the market. Epistemic Artefacts A Dialogical Reflection on Design Research in Architecture Edited by Matthias Ballestrem and Lidia Gasperoni Architectural artefacts are negotiated as epistemic objects, an autonomous and innovative form of knowledge capable of inaugurating and institutionalising architectural research. The backbone of this publication is a dialogue between the architect Matthias Ballestrem and the philosopher and architectural theorist Lidia Gasperoni. In a vibrant discussion, they consider the epistemic value of the architectural artefact, the role of research practices in making this knowledge explicit and accessible, and the criteria for qualifying as design-based research. MIAW 2021
The MIAW-Milan International Architecture Workshop is the international intensive programme at the Politecnico di Milano – School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering, that provides an international design forum for schools, teachers, and students, but it is also an informal platform to discuss issues and share ambitions that education implies. It aims to stimulate cross-over thinking between researchers and practitioners in the design field, involving different scales and encouraging an interdisciplinary approach towards design problems. The MIAW 2021 edition focused on the 2026 Winter Olympic Games Milano-Cortina. The workshop experimented with new design approaches to make the Olympic Games physically responsible, socially sustainable, and environmentally friendly.

Comment les laïcs se sont-ils impliqués dans la chose religieuse, en y investissant de l’argent, du temps, du capital symbolique et même émotionnel ? L’Église des laïcs questionne l’initiative des fidèles auprès des institutions religieuses, entre le XVIe et le XXe siècle, notamment dans la vieille Europe et les espaces américains dominés par les Ibériques. L’ouvrage observe ces modalités d’investissement dans le sacré au sein du catholicisme, tout en dressant des passerelles avec l’islam, les christianismes orientaux, la religion orthodoxe.
