For generations, the Royal Library in Denmark has contributed to or published bibliographies within the field of humanities and social sciences. This bibliography of Classical studies is a continuation of P.A. Hansen's Bibliography of Danish Contributions to Classical Scholarship from the Sixteenth Century to 1970 (Copenhagen 1977), continuing up to 1991. It restricts itself to Classical Antiquity, from which follows the exclusion of Theology (comprising works by or on Christian writers in antiquity, as well as the Scriptures), Middle Latin, Byzantine Greek (scholia on classical writers excepted), the Classical tradition, and the ancient cultures outside the classical world.
The book presents a new theory of the relationship between language and culture in a transnational and global perspective. The fundamental view is that languages spread across cultures, and cultures spread across languages, or in other words, that linguistic and cultural practices flow through social networks in the world along partially different paths and across national structures and communities.
For more than two generations Poul Jorgen Riis has played a leading role in Danish Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology. With Between Orient and Occident the Department of International Collections in the Danish National Museum celebrates the 90th birthday of P.J. Riis on the 26th of May, 2000. The book contains essays by some of Riiso' past and present colleagues, collaborators and students touching upon a wide range of subjects within Danish Classical and Near Eastern archaeological research: from Syria to Tunisia, from transport amphoras, and fine ware Arethusa cups to Islamic architecture.

When Denmark introduced compulsory education in 1814, the city of Copenhagen responsed by regulating the already existing private school system. Roughly half of the school age population went to some kind of school and of those the overwelming majority attended private schools, most of which were run by women. The book tells the story of these women, their schools and pupils on the 150 private schools from 1790-1820. Carol Gold's contention is that these private schools and their teachers were much better than is presently assumed in Danish historiography. The teachers were all literate; they could read and most of them could write. The education provided for girls ranged from the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic plus needlework in the beginner schools, to the "scientific" subjects of history, geography, natural sciences and foreign languages in the more advanced academies. Furthermore, the schools formed the basis of the Copenhagen school system which was established at the beginning of the 19th century.
