Since the mid 1990s political and public debates about the social responsibilities of firms have gained renewed force. Although CSR seems to be a well defined concept in management literature, in its diverse applications the CSR concept loses much of its pertinence. In Managing Corporate Social Responsibility in Action, the authors focus on different aspects of managing CSR in action to capture differences between discourse and practice. By examining the question from three angles - talking about CSR, doing CSR and measuring CSR - they attempt to make sense of the difference between practice and reality. This volume considers ways to overcome the difficulties that arise around CSR in action.

A Stakeholder Approach to Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility has grown into a global phenomenon that encompasses businesses, consumers, governments, and civil society, and many organizations have adopted its discourse. Yet corporate social responsibility remains an uncertain and poorly defined ambition, with few absolutes. First, the issues that organizations must address can easily be interpreted to include virtually everyone and everything. Second, with their unique, often particular characteristics, different stakeholder groups tend to focus only on specific issues that they believe are the most appropriate and relevant in organizations' corporate social responsibility programs. Thus, beliefs about what constitutes a...

The Oxford Handbook of Political Participation

The Oxford Handbook of Political Participation

The Oxford Handbook of Political Participation provides the first comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of political participation in all its varied forms, investigates a wide range of topics in the field from both a theoretical and methodological perspective, and covers the most recent developments in the area. It brings together research traditions from political science and sociology, bridging the gap in particular between political sociology and social movement studies; contributions also draw on crucial work in psychology, economics, anthropology, and geography. Following a detailed introduction from the editors, the volume is divided into nine parts that explore political participation across disciplines; core theoretical perspectives; methodological approaches; modes of participation; contexts; determinants; processes; outcomes; and current trends and future directions. The book will be a valuable reference work for anyone interested in understanding political participation and related themes.

Ten Years of Concurrency Semantics

Ten Years of Concurrency Semantics

This collection of reprints describes a unified treatment of semantics, covering a wide range of notions in parallel languages. Included are several foundational and introductory papers developing the methodology of metric semantics, studies on the comparative semantics of parallel object-oriented and logic programming, and papers on full abstraction and transition system specifications. In addition, links with process algebra and the theory of domain equations are established. Throughout, a uniform proof technique is used to relate operational and denotational models. The approach is flexible in that both linear time, branching time (or bisimulation) and intermediate models can be handled, as well as schematic and interpreted elementary actions. The reprints are preceded by an extensive introduction surveying related work on metric semantics.

Social Movements and the Transformation of American Health Care

Few contemporary social problems in the U.S. affect more people daily than those within the American health care system. Social Movements and the Transformation of American Health Care is the first collection of essays to examine dynamics of change in health care institutions through the lens of contemporary theory and research on collective action. Gathering scholars from medicine, health policy, history, sociology, and political science, the book considers health-related social movements from four distinct levels, concentrating on movements seeking changes in the regulation, financing, and distribution of health resources; changes in institutions in public health, bio-ethics, and other fields; interactions between social movements and professions; and the cultural dominance of the medical model, and the difficulties for framing and legitimizing new issues in health care it poses. At a time when American health care is long overdue for major changes, this book takes an essential look at movements, policies, and institutions to identify the common constraints and opportunities for reform within the health care system.

Mathematical Foundations of Programming Language Semantics

This volume is the proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on the Mathematical Foundations of Programming Language Semantics held at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, April 8-10, 1987. The 1st Workshop was at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas in April, 1985 (see LNCS 239), and the 2nd Workshop with a limited number of participants was at Kansas State in April, 1986. It was the intention of the organizers that the 3rd Workshop survey as many areas of the Mathematical Foundations of Programming Language Semantics as reasonably possible. The Workshop attracted 49 submitted papers, from which 28 papers were chosen for presentation. The papers ranged in subject from category theory and Lambda-calculus to the structure theory of domains and power domains, to implementation issues surrounding semantics.

Global Shifts

What global shifts in markets and power mean for the politics and governance of sustainability. In recent years, major shifts in global markets from North to South have created a new geography of trade and consumption, particularly in the agricultural sector. How this shift affects the governance of sustainability, and thus the future of the planet, is the pressing topic Philip Schleifer takes up in this book. The processes of twenty-first-century globalization are fundamentally changing the politics and governance of commodity production, Schleifer argues, with profound implications for the environment in the food-producing countries of the Global South. At the center of Schleifer's study a...

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 16th International Workshop on Algebraic Development Techniques, WADT 2002, held at Frauenchiemsee, Germany in September 2002.The 20 revised full papers presented together with 6 invited papers were carefully improved and selected from 44 workshop presentations during two rounds of reviewing. The papers are devoted to topics like formal methods for system development, specification languages and methods, systems and techniques for reasoning about specifications, specification development systems, methods and techniques for concurrent, distributed, and mobile systems, and algebraic and co-algebraic methods.

Charting Corporate Corruption

Charting Corporate Corruption

In the post-Enron era, corporate corruption has increasingly featured on the research agenda. This informative book provides a novel approach by charting the actual causes of corruption. This highly topical volume demonstrates how agency (the decisions and choices of individuals) and structure (the contextual pressures in the business environment) can interact to result in the rapid escalation of corporate crime and corruption. By analysing and describing the social psychological dimensions of this escalation, the book prescribes preventive measures that can be adapted and implemented by business organizations. Loaded with case studies and prospective solutions, Charting Corporate Corruption will be valuable to post-graduates studying business ethics, sociology and psychology, and to researchers seeking new theories and concepts in this field.

Verification of Sequential and Concurrent Programs

Verification of Sequential and Concurrent Programs

A major challenge for computer science is to develop methods that ensure program correctness. This textbook provides a structured introduction to program verification using an assertional approach - so called because it relies on the use of assertions that are attached to program control points. Sequential programs in the form of deterministic and non-deterministic programs, and concurrent programs in the form of parallel and distributed programs are considered within the context of their partial and total correctness. The use of these proof systems is demonstrated with the help of case studies. In particular, solutions to classical problems such as mutual exclusion are formally verified. Each chapter concludes with exercises and bibliographic remarks for further reading. As a result, this text is suitable as either an introductory course on program verification for the upper division of undergraduate studies or for graduate studies. It can also be used as an introduction to operational semantics. Outlines of possible courses are presented in the preface of the book.
