Een abecedarium is een gedicht waarvan elke regel of strofe begint met de opeenvolgende letters van het alfabet. De auteur koos opzettelijk deze fragmentarische vorm voor beschouwingen over de psychologie van de kunst. Zijn bedoeling is bestaande kaders open te breken en het denken in beweging te brengen of te houden. In het binnenwerk van de tekst blijven immers gaten en kieren uitgespaard waarlangs iets kan binnenglippen, inkruipen, flitsen of donderen. Dit zou moeten toelaten dat de geest van en voor de kunst wordt geopend en niet gesloten.
