Prostaglandins and the Kidney

In June, 1981, we conducted a two day international symposium in Rome devoted to original scientific presentations on arachidonic acid metabolism in the kidney. Scientists from 20 countries were represented either in the general scientific program or in the poster presentation. This book does not represent the proceedings of this international gathering, but rather the edited manuscripts specifically prepared as sum maries of the scientific presentations. We feel that the timeliness and originality of the contributions as well as the need for a compilation of existing work on prosta glandins, thromboxane, and the kidney warrant this publication. The meetings would have been impossible withou...

Mechanisms of Physical and Emotional Stress

Mechanisms of Physical and Emotional Stress

It has been over 50 years since Hans Selye formulated his concept of stress. This came after the isolation of epinephrine and norepinephrine and after the sympathetic system was associated with Walter Cannon's "fight or flight" response. The intervening years have witnessed a number of dis coveries that have furthered our understanding of the mechanisms of the stress response. The isolation, identification and manufacture of gluco corticoids, the identification and synthesis of ACTH and vasopressin, and the demonstration of hypothalamic regulation of ACTH secretion were pivotal discoveries. The recent identification and synthesis of CRR by Willie Vale and his colleagues gave new impetus to stress research. Several new concepts of stress have developed as a result of advances in bench research. These include the concept of an integrated "stress sys tem", the realization that there are bi-directional effects between stress and the immune system, the suggestion that a number of common psychiatric disorders represent dysregulation of systems responding to stress, and the epidemiologic association of stress with the major scourges of humanity.

The Eicosanoids

The Eicosanoids

This comprehensive reference work, updated from the first edition, brings together the knowledge and expertise of contributors from around the world. It includes new topics such as prostaglandin synthetase enzyme, new synthetic eicosanoids, innovative analytical methods, the influence of cytokines in the regulation of synthesis and actions, newer eicosanoids that influence the cardiovascular system, and newly discovered roles in reproduction and interactions with nitric oxide. This book satisfies a surge of interest in prostaglandins—NSAIDS (e.g. aspirin) are the biggest selling drugs of all time, and the field has been refreshed by the advent of new types (selective COX-2 inhibitors, anti-leukotiene drugs).

Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Physiology of Phospholipase A2 and Its Regulatory Factors

During the past decade there has been a dramatic expansion of our knowledge on phospholipases in general, and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in particular. Progress in this field has been evident on many fronts, with novel information rapidly accumulating in the literature regarding the chemistry and molecular biology of this enzyme and its role in many important physiological processes. These include cellular signal transduction via the G-protein cycle, and in the generation of many cellular mediators, such as the platelet activating factor (PAF) and the eicosanoids that participate in the initiation and propagation of inflammation, to mention a few. This symposium was organized to obtain an overv...

Annexins

Annexins

The Annexins is focused on a specific family of calcium and membrane-binding proteins, annexins, ubiquitously spread within living organisms, including animals, plants and fungi. The volume covers important areas of annexinology. The characterization of structural-functional relationship within the annexin family of proteins, together with emerging transgenic animal models, provides an up-to-date overview of potential physiological roles of annexins. Growing evidence of participation of annexins in human diseases, called annexinopathies, related to disturbances in signal transduction, vesicular traffic, ion homeostasis and energy metabolism within the cell. The book will attract a broad scientific audience, not only scientists interested in annexins, but also others involved in multidisciplinary studies, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. It can be used in courses relating to special topics such as calcium homeostasis, calcium-binding proteins, membrane structure and transport properties, various signal transduction pathways, and membrane trafficking.

Protein Dynamics, Function, and Design

This volume is a collection of articles from the proceedings of the International School of Structural Biology and Magnetic Resonance 3rd Course: Protein Dynamics, Function, and Design. This NATO Advance Study Institute was held in Erice at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture on April 16-28, 1997. The aim of the Institute was to bring together experts applyipg different physical methods to problems of macro molecular dynamics-notably x-ray diffraction, NMR and other forms of spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. Emphasis was placed on those systems and types of problems-such as mechanisms of allosteric control, signal transmission, induced fit to different ligands w...

The Fourth International Conference on Immunopharmacology took place in Osaka, Japan, May 1988. It was attended by over 900 participants from a variety of fields, illustrating the broad interest and wide-ranging applications of the subject. This Proceedings volume provides a comprehensive record of the Conference and is organized according to the sectional headings employed at the meeting. The topics covered include basic and clinical immunology, and preclinical and clinical aspects of immunopharmacology. The material presented is referenced and indexed throughout, and illustrated with photographs, diagrams and tables.
