The book 'IJsselmeer. A spatial perspective' looks at the area from various angles: geomorphology, history, planning and the economy. The book studies spatial features, presents design proposals for the future, and at the same time considers the dynamics of the metropolitan region into which the area has merged, the stagnating ecosystem, the impact of climate change and the increasing pressure of recreational activities. The drawings, maps and photographs in the book are not just illustrations, but a essential part of what it has to tell us: they 'describe' the landscape as it used to be, is now and may yet become.
CItyMaker
CItyMaker presents a method and a set of tools to generate alternative solutions for an urban context. The method proposes the use of a combined set of design patterns encoding typical design moves used by urban designers. The combination of patterns generates different layouts which can be adjusted by manipulating several parameters in relation to updated urban indicators. The patterns were developed from observation of typical urban design procedures, first encoded as discursive grammars and later translated into parametric design patterns. The CItyMaker method and tools allows the designer to compose a design solution from a set of programmatic premises and fine-tune it by pulling parameters whilst checking the changes in urban indicators. These tools improve the designer's awareness of the consequences of their design moves.
Drawing the Ground – Landscape Urbanism Today
Founded in 1990, Palmbout Urban Landscapes is now one of the leading urban planning offices in the Netherlands. It exemplifies current practices of urban planning in that country. Its approach is characterized by a constant search for a new relationship between urban planning, architecture, and landscape architecture. In this process of experimentation, Palmbout Urban Landscapes has established a profile not only in the field of the relationship between urban planning and architecture but above all in terms of mutual interactions between urban planning, the analysis and design of landscape, and infrastructure. The book documents some fifteen projects organized into six thematic blocks, including such extensive projects as Amsterdam Ijburg, a design for an urban extension to Amsterdam with a total area of 450 hectares, 18,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, 30,000 square meters of stores, and other facilities, and Maastricht Belvedere, a restructuring of 280 hectares of a former industrial site with 4,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, parking lots, and a vehicle bridge.
