Asymptotic Methods in Electromagnetics
Numerically rigorous techniques for the computation of electromagnetic fields diffracted by an object become computationally intensive, if not impractical to handle, at high frequencies and one must resort to asymptotic methods to solve the scattering problem at short wavelengths. The asymptotic methods provide closed form expansions for the diffracted fields and are also useful for eliciting physical interpretations of the various diffraction phenomena. One of the principal objectives of this book is to discuss the different asymptotic methods in a unified manner. Although the book contains explicit formulas for computing the field diffracted by conducting or dielectric-coated objects, it also provides the mathematical foundations of the different methods and explains how they are interrelated.
Direct and Inverse Methods in Radar Polarimetry
This foreword deals exclusively with the planning, organization, and execution of the Workshop's scientific as well as cultural programs. It is opened with a synopsis on how the global political changes that occurred immediately after the Workshop caused the ~elay in producing the proceedings, followed by a brief exposition on need, timeliness, and importance of this second ARW in the field of electromagnetic imaging, radar remote sensing, and target versus clutter di~rimination; and an outline of the objectives. An informal discussion about some of the organizational details, a retrospective summary of events, and a preview of the third workshop, planned for 1993 September 19-25, is intended to recapture the spirit of this second NATO Advanced Research Workshop (1988 September 18-24), and will reveal how successful it was in compar ison to the first of 1983 September 18-24, how its accomplishments may be appreciated and why a third and last workshop was requested by its participants to take place during 1993 September 19-25.
Acoustic High-Frequency Diffraction Theory
Covering analytical research in aerial and underwater acoustics, this new scholarly work treats the interaction of acoustic waves with obstacles which may be rigid, soft, elastic, or characterized by an impedance boundary condition. The approach is founded on asymptotic high frequency methods which are based on the concept of rays. For despite the progress in numerical methods for diffraction problems, ray methods still remain the most useful method of approximation for analyzing wave motions. They provide not only considerable physical insight and understanding of diffraction mechanisms but they are also able to treat objects which are still too large in terms of wavelength to fall in the realm of numerical analysis.

Les méthodes asymptotiques haute fréquence, inventées pour traiter ces situations, donnent des expressions entièrement explicites du champ diffracté, ainsi qu'une interprétation physique des mécanismes de diffraction. L'ouvrage présente de manière unifiée les différentes méthodes asymptotiques. Il donne d'une part les formules essentielles permettant le calcul effectif du champ diffracté, en un point quelconque de l'espace, par un objet complexe conducteur, recouvert de matériau diélectrique. Il explicite d'autre part les fondements mathématiques des méthodes présentées. Il permet donc d'acquérir une connaissance pratique ainsi qu'une compréhension théorique de ces méthodes.
