Wood has been used since prehistoric times for cooking and heating, and remains the primary energy source for billions of people throughout the world. In Bhutan, fuelwood accounts for 78% of total energy consumption and is the primary energy source for most rural and urban residents. Despite the importance of fuelwood in Bhutan, little is known about household fuelwood consumption, available biomass, or growth and yield. This study documents fuelwood consumption, standing biomass, and annual growth and yield through a case study in Nasiphel and adjacent hamlets (elevation 2800 m), and a high elevation site (Chajeyna, 4800 m) where Nasiphel residents and others rely on fuelwood for one month ...

This paper discusses the determinants of firewood consumption in a poor township in rural Northern China, with a special focus on the relationship between households' economic wealth and fuelwood consumption. We find strong support for the poverty-environment hypothesis since household economic wealth is a significant and negative determinant of fuelwood consumption. Fuelwood can therefore be considered as an inferior good for the whole population in the rural area under study, although further evidence shows that at the top of the wealth distribution, there might be some floor effect in the decreasing fuelwood consumption. Besides economic wealth, our analysis also shows that the price effect is important in explaining firewood consumption behaviours, the price effect gaining importance with rising incomes. Finally, market access, increasing education and off-farm work are also found to be key factors in the energy consumption behaviours, especially when dealing with energy source switching behaviours.
