This book is an attempt to summarize all knowledge and enable entomologists to identify all species belonging to these four genera. Moreover, this work complements to the The western Palaearctic Zygaenidae and it will later be accompanied by a distribution atlas. A short summary of the characters of the Procridinae, comments on possible phylogenetic relationships, a complete check-list of species and all known synonyms, an identification key with genitalia drawings of all species, a systematic catalogue with type localities and depositories of types, data on the distribution, and annotated list of all known larval foodplants, description of new biologies and a detailed bibliography are provided. Moreover, illustrations of wing venation, morphology of antennae and legs, larval morphology, so far unpublished photos of larvae and their foodplants and colour paintings of all mentioned species are included.

The Zygaenidae are a family of day-flying moths with an unusual biology – they are capable of releasing prussic (hydrocyanic) acid. All Australian species belong to the subfamily Procridinae (commonly known as foresters) and many of these feature iridescent green colours or a wasp-like look. This is the first study of the Australian fauna of these attractive and biologically interesting moths. A complete handbook providing an extensive introduction to the biology, ecology and behaviour of the Zygaenidae. The introduction provides detailed information on zygaenid systematics and phylogeny, life cycles, morphology, zoogeography and palaeontology, genetics and individual variation, ecology and behaviour, conservation, collecting and breeding techniques. In the systematic part of the book, the 115 species of westen Palaearctic Zygaenidae, currently contained in the three subfamilies Procridinae, Chalcosiinae and Zygaeninae, are treated. Each species is briefly described, followed by differentiating characters of similar species, individual and geographical variation, distribution (with maps for each species), ecology, behaviour, early instars and larval foodplants. Colour plates illustrate all species and the male and female genitalia of the Procridinae are also figured. A bibliography provides references to the most relevant literature for those interested in current research.

In this volume 268 species of the Larentinae are covered. Many of the genera have caused serious problems in identification, but based on the larger number of specimens illustrated on the 25 colour plates, the species can now be identified much more easily. In additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, differential characters are pointed out with arrows. As in the previously published volumes 1,2 and 4, maps with the European distribution are given with dots for verified specimens. There are photographs of male and female genitalia of all species and this volume also contains a systematic catalogue of the European species including those of the neighbouring regions of North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey and the Middle East. This is the first volume including genetic information from DNA barcoding which proved to be a useful, additional tool in identification, taxonomy and species delimitation.
