Technology and Science for the Ships of the Future
In 1974, a scientific conference covering marine automation group and large vessels issues was organized under the patronage of the Technical Naval Studies Centre (CETENA) and the Italian National Research Council (CNR). A later collaboration with the Marine Technical Association (ATENA) led to the renaming of the conference as NAV, extending the topics covered to the technical field previously covered by ATENA national conferences. The NAV conference is now held every 3 years, and attracts specialists from all over the world. This book presents the proceedings of NAV 2018, held in Trieste, Italy, in June 2018. Maritime Work Law Fundamentals: Responsible Shipowners, Reliable Seafarers
The importance of international maritime labour law - both as a component of - ternational maritime law, and in socio-political and economic terms - has been recognised by the IMO International Maritime Law Institute for a number of years. Indeed, the Institute has annually organised a course on maritime labour law with the participation of inter alia the International Maritime Organization, the - ternational Labour Organization, the International Transport Workers’ Federation, and the German Shipowners’ Association. It was therefore a great pleasure when the authors invited me to introduce their forthcoming monograph on Maritime Work Law Fundamentals: Responsible S- powners Reliable Seafarers. As the title suggests, a fundamental challenge of this branch of international maritime law is to achieve a balance between the interests of the two main stakeholders. Institutionally, the effort to achieve this balance dates back a number of decades with its genesis mainly found in the work of the International Labour Organization. It has to be said that whilst this effort achieved great progress, it has led to a haphazard, plethora of legal instruments.

The Belt and Road Initiative and the Law of the Sea
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) put forward by China in 2013 includes the land-based ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’ and the ocean-based ‘21st-Century Maritime Silk Road’ (MSR) which focuses on the promotion of cooperation between States along the Belt and the Road. As the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC) has established the global maritime order, all ocean-related activities generating from the BRI projects along the MSR are in principle subject to the LOSC governance. The Belt and Road Initiative and the Law of the Sea discusses the use of oceans in the context of BRI covering navigational safety, marine energy and sea ports, maritime law enforcement and access of landlocked states to the sea.
