This book systematically focuses on central sleep apneas, analyzing their relationship especially with heart failure and discussing recent research results and emerging treatment strategies based on feedback modulation. The opening chapters present historical background information on Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR), clarify terminology, and explain the mechanics and chemistry of respiration. Following a description of the physiology of respiration, the pathophysiology underlying central apneas in different disorders and particularly in heart failure is discussed. The similarities and differences of obstructive and central apneas are then considered. The book looks beyond the concept of sleep apnea to daytime CSR and periodic breathing during effort and contrasts the opposing views of CSR as a compensatory phenomenon or as detrimental to the failing heart. The diagnostic tools currently in use for the detection of CSR are thoroughly reviewed, with guidance on interpretation of findings. The book concludes by describing the various forms of treatment that are available for CSR and by explaining how to select patients for treatment.

Perioperative and Critical Care Medicine

by S. GUASCHINO Dean, Trieste University School of Medicine The society we live in is in continual development and has a number of priori ties for improving the standards of communication. The scientific sector in par ticular thrives on the exchange of information, which is the foundation of progress itself. The channels through which this interaction takes place are many and are aimed at optimising teaching methodology. Researchers and scholars, research centres and the places of higher learning themselves are increasingly aware of the growing importance of universities, which, thanks to their intrinsic ability to renew themselves, have taken on a vital central and propulsive role. Cardiac Development

This is the only in-depth, single author survey of heart development. It will provide a more systematic, up-to-date synthesis of the subject than any other volume, spanning the range from classical anatomical studies to recent findings in molecular biology. It also covers topics that are often omitted from discussions of heart development, such as myocardial function, cardiac innervation, and conduction development and clinical correlates will be discussed throughout. The book is beautifully illustrated by Karen Waldo, an artist who has collaborated with Dr. Kirby for many years.

Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Lower Extremity Ulcers, Antimicrobials, Wound Assessment, Care, Measurement and Repair

This book introduces readers to the latest developments regarding pressure injury wounds, diabetic wounds, and negative pressure wound therapy. The first part exclusively deals with wounds from pressure ulcers, describing in detail their prevention, classification, and treatment. In turn, chapters addressing diabetic wounds form the middle part of the book. Here, the authors provide guidance on the medication and treatment (e.g. stem cells, laser) of patients suffering from this disease. The book’s last part, which focuses on negative pressure wound therapy, addresses all major aspects of this approach, reflecting the latest research. Illustrated with a wealth of high-quality pictures throughout, the book offers a unique resource for both beginners and experienced plastic surgeons.

Emerging Pathologies in Cardiology

Clinical practice is evolving at a rapid pace, nowhere more so than in the field of cardiology.Acute Coronary Syndromes, Sudden Cardiac Death, Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation,Syncope, and Prevention of Global Cardiovascular Risk are the main Emerging Pathologies to which many investigators are addressing their researches. Less than 10 years ago, some of them were considered of relevance only to internists, and some others as a common benign arrhythmia or an ineluctable illness. Today, their prevalence amongst the population represents one of the major public health problems at the beginning of the third millen- um. The need to have a state of the art overview of the epidemiology,physiopat- ...

Idiopathic Dilated Cardiomyopathy

The latest developments in molecular biology have broadened our understanding of the pathogenesis of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC). In this book, written by well-known experts, a comprehensive overviewof IDC is given, including basic cellular and molecular concepts, virology, immunology, cardiac receptors and ionic channels, contractility abnormalities, microcirculation, and oxygen supply in cardiac hypertrophy. Details on basic research are supplemented by results of new clinical trials in IDC and the latest data on the epidemiology of the disease. For those who are interested in the disease, the book summarizes progress in all major fields.

Anaesthesia, Pain, Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine — A.P.I.C.E.

Continuous update in critical care medicine is a real challenge due to the growing dimensions of its contents; these elements are the result of new research acquisitions, and of those clinical situations where the physician is able to intervene at a given moment, with the use of effective prevention techniques. They are also the result of new technologies able to define complex sub-clinical diagnostic aspects; lastly, they are the result of effective therapeutic techniques available, and of treatment strategies able to influence radically and positively the patient's clinical course. Critical care medicine is playing a key role in the most advanced environments, as it represents a cross-sectional field of action, involving several specialties, such as anaesthesiology, general medicine, surgery, paediatrics.
