Merlin James was born in Cardiff in 1960 and now lives in Glasgow.Merlin James' paintings are at once playful and complex, gestural and rigorous, expressive and synthetic. Collage, cropping, erasure and puncturing emphasise immediacy and materiality, yet layers of allusion and reference evoke painting's past and address diverse, often elusive, human experiences.
