The rapid growth of gemological sciences and mineralogy demands a dictionary such as this for gemologists, mineralogists, geologists, jewel dealers, industry and hobbyists. With some 16,000 comprehensive definitions, supplemented by more than 250 diagrams and figures, this is a one-stop reference to any matter dealing with gems and gemology.
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
This edition has been revised and expanded to reflect recent and varied developments in the highly specialized field of gemology. Among these are: gemstone synthesis; imitation gems; the alteration of gems to improve, add, remove or otherwise change their color, phenomena or clarity; the importance and widespread uses of the microscope to reflect the aforementioned developments; and a number of new gem minerals or new forms of previously described minerals recently discovered or actively marketed for the first time. The chapter on Descriptive Gemology has been divided into two groups: important gemstones (those gem materials most widely used in jewelry and ornamental objects) and less important gemstones (those less commonly encountered).
This widely acclaimed landmark bibliography contains over 7,500 entries--predominantly books, but also periodical articles, from 1500 up to 1985, with some books published after that date. Destined to become a classic, since the name Sinkankas is synonymous with gemology...monumental...There is no other comparable book...a mandatory purchase. --REFERENCE BOOKS BULLETIN To say that the Sinkankas bibliography is the best gemological bibliography is to condemn it with faint praise. The book is astounding! --GEOLITERARY BULLETIN ...the most important book that a gemologist could have. --LAPIDARY JOURNAL
Bring on the bling! A step-by-step guide to achieving expert color-work with fabrics to create dynamic, glittering gemstone-themed quilts Quilting expert Andrea Tsang Jackson guides readers through transforming the beauty, allure, and power of natural stones into glittering complex patchwork quilts. She provides a master plan for the color work required to achieve effective transparency and light with fabric selection. Readers will be able to paper piece their way to a jewelry box of blocks. Beginning with nine traditional gemstone shapes, such as teardrop, marquis, and emerald cuts, each block progresses in complexity so quilters can hone their skills as they work their way through the book. Then, quilters will be inspired to use their blocks in a series of projects, both large and small. Created with intermediate quilters in mind, the book includes: Jackson's speedy chain-piecing technique for paper piecing; graded patterns to create the perfect finished block size; traditional and modern settings; watercolor illustrations of gemstones.

This is the seventh edition of a book which has been for years the 'bible' of professional and amateur gemmologists, as well as retail jewellers. Originally written by Robert Webster, an expert who dedicated most of his life to the subject and who worked in the London Gem Testing Laboratory for twenty-five years, this edition has been completely revised and updated by E. Alan Jobbins, Keeper of Minerals and Gemstones at the Geological Museum in London for thirty-five years. The first part of the book is a comprehensive glossary on all aspects of gemstones and the terms associated with them. The second part includes sections on manufactured gems, the enhancement of gem materials and on the precautions necessary for avoiding damage to gemstones and jewellery during manufacturing, repairs and cleaning. There are comprehensive sets of tables of the physical constraints needed for gem testing, of the sources of gem materials and the cuts used to demonstrate their beauty. Fifteen pages of colour photographs will assist in the identification of inclusions and there are many useful conversion tables.
