This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages, PADL 2003, held in New Orleans, LA, USA, in January 2003. The 23 revised full papers presented together with 3 invited contributions were carefully reviewed and selected from 57 submissions. All current aspects of declarative programming are addressed.
Term Rewriting and All That
This textbook offers a unified and self-contained introduction to the field of term rewriting. It covers all the basic material (abstract reduction systems, termination, confluence, completion, and combination problems), but also some important and closely connected subjects: universal algebra, unification theory, Gröbner bases and Buchberger's algorithm. The main algorithms are presented both informally and as programs in the functional language Standard ML (an appendix contains a quick and easy introduction to ML). Certain crucial algorithms like unification and congruence closure are covered in more depth and Pascal programs are developed. The book contains many examples and over 170 exercises. This text is also an ideal reference book for professional researchers: results that have been spread over many conference and journal articles are collected together in a unified notation, proofs of almost all theorems are provided, and each chapter closes with a guide to the literature.

Logic Programming and Automated Reasoning
This volume presents the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Logic Programming and Automated Reasoning, held aboard the ship "Marshal Koshevoi" on the Dnieper near Kiev, Ukraine in July 1994. A Perspective in Theoretical Computer Science
This volume consists of invited papers written by eminent researchers working in the areas of theoretical computer science. The contents of the papers reflect the current trend of research being carried out in each of the areas. Some of the areas featured are petri-nets, distributed systems, map-generating systems, Lindenmayer systems, logic, cryptography, graph grammars, probabilistic automata, array grammars and pattern recognition. Annual Review of South Asian Languages and Linguistics
South Asia is home to a large number of languages and dialects. Although linguists working on this region have made significant contributions to our understanding of language, society, and language in society on a global scale, there is as yet no recognized international forum for the exchange of ideas amongst linguists working on South Asia. The Annual Review of South Asian Languages and Linguistics is designed to be just that forum. It brings together empirical and theoretical research and serves as a testing ground for the articulation of new ideas and approaches which may be grounded in a study of South Asian languages but which have universal applicability.
