The volume covers the interactions and compounds of gold with noble gases, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine, and chlorine. Along with the expanding use of gold in recent years, for example in electronics and in aerospace equipment, there has been an impressive series of advances in the chemistry of gold compounds and of discoveries of unusual oxidation states. Hydrogen forms a nonstoichiometric solid phase, AuHn at high pressures with a maximum value of n=0.43. Hydrides such as AuH exist only in the gaseous state. The predominant oxide is that of gold(III), Au2O3. The lower-valent oxides Au2O and AuO form during anodic oxidation of gold. There still is no evidence for definite gold(I) an...

Gertrude, Mabel, May

Gertrude Stein’s first novel, one that was never published during her lifetime, was called Q.E.D. She wrote it to exorcise the experience of her first passionate love affair with the New Yorker May Bookstaver, the friend and lover of the Bostonian Mabel Haynes, a fellow student of Gertrude Stein’s at Johns Hopkins Medical School between 1898 and 1902. The impact of the complicated affair on Stein’s writing has attracted considerable attention but the subsequent lives of her two intimate friends have not been covered so far in any detailed way. Gwendolyn Leick is the granddaughter of Mabel Haynes, who moved to Austria-Hungary in 1905. She began writing this book, after the chance discov...

Gertrude

With Gertrude, Herman Hesse continues his lifelong exploration of the irreconcilable elements of human existence. In this fictional memoir, the renowned composer Kuhn recounts his tangled relationships with two artists--his friend Heinrich Muoth, a brooding, self-destructive opera singer, and the gentle, self-assured Gertrude Imthor. Kuhn is drawn to Gertrude upon their first meeting, but Gertrude falls in love with Heinrich, to whom she is introduced when Kuhn auditions them for the leads in his new opera. Hopelessly ill-matched, Gertrude and Heinrich have a disastrous marriage that leaves them both ruined. Yet this tragic affair also becomes the inspiration for Kuhn's opera, the most important success of his artistic life.
