Causal Symmetric Spaces

This book is intended to introduce researchers and graduate students to the concepts of causal symmetric spaces. To date, results of recent studies considered standard by specialists have not been widely published. This book seeks to bring this information to students and researchers in geometry and analysis on causal symmetric spaces. Includes the newest results in harmonic analysis including Spherical functions on ordered symmetric space and the holmorphic discrete series and Hardy spaces on compactly casual symmetric spaces Deals with the infinitesimal situation, coverings of symmetric spaces, classification of causal symmetric pairs and invariant cone fields Presents basic geometric properties of semi-simple symmetric spaces Includes appendices on Lie algebras and Lie groups, Bounded symmetric domains (Cayley transforms), Antiholomorphic Involutions on Bounded Domains and Para-Hermitian Symmetric Spaces

Radon Transforms, Geometry, and Wavelets

This volume is based on two special sessions held at the AMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans in January 2007, and a satellite workshop held in Baton Rouge on January 4-5, 2007. It consists of invited expositions that together represent a broad spectrum of fields, stressing surprising interactions and connections between areas that are normally thought of as disparate. The main topics are geometry and integral transforms. On the one side are harmonic analysis, symmetric spaces, representation theory (the groups include continuous and discrete, finite and infinite, compact and non-compact), operator theory, PDE, and mathematical probability. Moving in the applied direction we encounter wavelets, ...

The Radon Transform, Inverse Problems, and Tomography

Since their emergence in 1917, tomography and inverse problems remain active and important fields that combine pure and applied mathematics and provide strong interplay between diverse mathematical problems and applications. The applied side is best known for medical and scientific use, in particular, medical imaging, radiotherapy, and industrial non-destructive testing. Doctors use tomography to see the internal structure of the body or to find functional information, such asmetabolic processes, noninvasively. Scientists discover defects in objects, the topography of the ocean floor, and geological information using X-rays, geophysical measurements, sonar, or other data. This volume, based ...

Refection Positivity is a central theme at the crossroads of Lie group representations, euclidean and abstract harmonic analysis, constructive quantum field theory, and stochastic processes. This book provides the first presentation of the representation theoretic aspects of Refection Positivity and discusses its connections to those different fields on a level suitable for doctoral students and researchers in related fields. It starts with a general introduction to the ideas and methods involving refection positive Hilbert spaces and the Osterwalder--Schrader transform. It then turns to Reflection Positivity in Lie group representations. Already the case of one-dimensional groups is extreme...

Representation Theory and Harmonic Analysis on Symmetric Spaces

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Harmonic Analysis, in honor of Gestur Ólafsson's 65th birthday, held on January 4, 2017, in Atlanta, Georgia. The articles in this volume provide fresh perspectives on many different directions within harmonic analysis, highlighting the connections between harmonic analysis and the areas of integral geometry, complex analysis, operator algebras, Lie algebras, special functions, and differential operators. The breadth of contributions highlights the diversity of current research in harmonic analysis and shows that it continues to be a vibrant and fruitful field of inquiry.

Trends in Harmonic Analysis and Its Applications

This volume contains the proceedings of the AMS Special Session on Harmonic Analysis and Its Applications held March 29-30, 2014, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD. It provides an in depth look at the many directions taken by experts in Harmonic Analysis and related areas. The papers cover topics such as frame theory, Gabor analysis, interpolation and Besov spaces on compact manifolds, Cuntz-Krieger algebras, reproducing kernel spaces, solenoids, hypergeometric shift operators and analysis on infinite dimensional groups. Expositions are by leading researchers in the field, both young and established. The papers consist of new results or new approaches to solutions, and at the same time provide an introduction into the respective subjects.

This is a graduate text on harmonic analysis. It begins with a chapter on Fourier series. The next two chapters are spent covering function theory on real spaces and the classical Fourier transform. Following this is a chapter covering the Paley-Wiener Theorem, distributions, convolution, the Sobolev Lemma, the Shannon Sampling Theorem, windowed and wavelet transforms, and the Poisson summation formula. The later chapters deal with non-commutative theory. Topics include abstract homogeneous spaces and fundamentals of representation theory. These are used in the last two chapters. The first covers the Heisenberg group which encode the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. This is first instance of the use of infinite dimensional representations. The last covers the basic theory of compact groups. Here finite dimensionality is sufficient. Spherical functions and Gelfand pairs are discussed. There is also a section on finite groups. The text is interspersed with over 50 exercise sets that range in difficulty from basic to challenging. The text should be useful to graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering.
