The Art of Change provides practitioners with in-depth information on the theory and practice of strategic therapy, presenting an innovative approach to conceptualizing and solving human problems. The Logic of Therapeutic Change

In 1993 the authors published The Art of Change: Strategic Therapy and Hypnotherapy Without Trance, a revolutionary work that introduced a series of effective clinical strategies to create therapeutic change, even in seemingly impossible cases. In his new book, the author performs another quantum leap, leading his readers to a more operative knowledge of the precise logic of therapeutic change. Most intimidating mental disorders are based on perceptions of reality that when using an ordinary 'common-sense' logic as our reading lens, look as if they are irrational, bizarre, illogical and therefore hard to understand and manage.

This groundbreaking volume concentrates on solution-oriented treatment of some of the most difficult pathologies - anorexia, bulimia and vomiting (as a separate category introduced by Nardone et al). The logic and apparent simplicity of the way these complex conditions are treated is truly outstanding. As opposed to a long-drawn psychotherapy, Nardone and his colleagues offer a relatively short period of treatment, consisting of dialogue between the patient and the therapist, and sometimes the patient's family. The patient is also given some "homework" to do in-between the sessions. Rather than looking at the "why" of the situation, this approach looks at "how" the problem manifests itself and what can be done about it. The book starts by outlining the pathologies and the logic behind this type of brief therapy. It then moves on to examine particular case studies and the reader gets immersed in the fascinating dialogue between the therapist and the client.

The Strategic Dialogue is a fine strategy by which one can achieve maximum results with minimum effort. It was developed through a natural evolutionary process from previous treatments for particular pathologies, and composed of therapeutic stratagems and specific sequences of ad hoc maneuvres constructed for different types of problems. This book represents both the starting and finishing line of all of the research, clinical practice, and managerial consulting performed by the authors over a fifteen year period at the Centro Terapia Strategica of Arezzo (Strategic Therapy Center). This work can be referred to as the finishing line because the Strategic Dialogue, an advanced therapeutic method of conducting a therapy session and inducing radical changes rapidly in the patient, represents the culmination of all that has been achieved so far in the field.

Brief Strategic Solution-oriented Therapy of Phobic and Obsessive Disorders

This book is about psychological disorders based on irrational fears - those apparently unmotivated, paralyzing, panic-filled, gutwrenching fears whose multiplicity and diversity are barely contained in the diagnoses phobias and obsessional disorders. The author, worldrenowned therapist Giorgio Nardone, offers a brief (usually less than 20 session) treatment method that leads to a change in the interpersonal, cognitive, and emotional organizations underlying these painful and all too-common problems. Therapists using a strategic framework focus on reframing patients' representations of self and other, and on changing the relational patterns that sustain fearful perceptions. Based on extensiv...

The Language of Change

In this groundbreaking book, a world authority on human communication and communication therapy points out a basic contradiction in the way therapists use language. Although communications emerging in therapy are ascribed to the mind's unconscious, dark side, they are habitually translated in clinical dialogue into the supposedly therapeutic language of reason and consciousness. But, Dr. Watzlawick argues, it is precisely this bizarre language of the unconscious which holds the key to those realms where alone therapeutic change can take place.

Knowing Through Changing

This book is the result of fifteen years of clinical-research work carried out at the Brief Strategic Centre of Arezzo, Italy, for the development of a continuously improving, efficient and effective treatment of various human problems. The authors put forward a simple yet comprehensive description of the epistemology and genealogy of Brief Strategic Therapy, while emphasizing the most evolved therapeutic interventions for each of the various disorders studied, acquired from the experimental-empirical research carried out in everyday clinical practice. All the phases of the advanced model of Brief Strategic Therapy are covered, revealing the corresponding objectives, strategies and language ...
