This book is a history of a particular group of Italian immigrants that came from the Asiago Plateau in northern Italy. Their lives and experiences are given meaning in this book, bringing their families, friends and the general public, knowledge of their origins and background in northern Italy and the contributions they made on the Gogebic Iron Range. Byzantium between the Ottomans and the Latins
This is a detailed analysis of Byzantine political attitudes towards the Ottomans and western Europeans during the critical last century of Byzantium. The book covers three major regions of the Byzantine Empire - Thessalonike, Constantinople, and the Morea - where the political orientations of aristocrats, merchants, the urban populace, peasants, and members of ecclesiastical and monastic circles are examined against the background of social and economic conditions. Through its particular focus on the political and religious dispositions of individuals, families and social groups, the book offers an original view of late Byzantine politics and society that is not found in conventional narratives. Guns and Men in Medieval Europe, 1200-1500
These articles are devoted to the two main aspects of medieval warfare: men and technology. Men fought, led, and ultimately killed in war, while the technology that they used facilitated these tasks. The first group of essays highlights human strengths in the fighting of medieval wars, with a focus on events of the 14th and 15th centuries, specifically the Anglo-French wars and wars against the Turks. A second group addresses the technological side of warfare, in particular the advent and proliferation of early gunpowder weapons which evolved rapidly during the late Middle Ages, although never replacing the role of men. The articles study various facets of this evolution, from the increased use and effectiveness of guns in battles, sieges, and naval warfare, to changes in their science and metallurgy, surgical treatment of wounds caused by them, and governmental centralization of the technology.

On behalf of the NDT 2010 conference, the Program Committee and Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, we welcome you to the proceedings of the Second International Conference on ‘Networked Digital Technologies’ (NDT 2010). The NDT 2010 conference explored new advances in digital and Web technology applications. It brought together researchers from various areas of computer and information sciences who addressed both theoretical and applied aspects of Web technology and Internet applications. We hope that the discussions and exchange of ideas that took place will contribute to advancements in the technology in the near future. The conference received 216 papers, out of which 85 were accepted, resulting in an acceptance rate of 39%. These accepted papers are authored by researchers from 34 countries covering many significant areas of Web applications. Each paper was evaluated by a minimum of two reviewers. Finally, we believe that the proceedings document the best research in the studied areas. We express our thanks to the Charles University in Prague, Springer, the authors and the organizers of the conference.
