O livro comunica os resultados de três pesquisas sobre o movimento estudantil, ocorrido no Brasil em 2015 e 2016, contra políticas que significavam retrocessos no direito à educação. Destaca-se a pesquisa nacional "Ocupações secundaristas no Brasil em 2015 e 2016", financiada pela CNPq e desenvolvida por 10 equipes estaduais e 18 Instituições de Educação Superior. Seus 15 capítulos tentam conhecer as influências da experiência de ter participado deste movimento na constituição de tais adolescentes e jovens como sujeitos políticos, considerando a sua vida escolar anterior ao movimento, a formação política antes das ocupações e as trajetórias após as ocupações. A primeira parte traz análises mais gerais, transversais, em especial com base nas 80 entrevistas feitas pela pesquisa nacional, que tratam das emoções no protesto, das experiências políticas e formativas e das temáticas da orientação sexual, da identidade étnico-racial e da religiosidade. A segunda parte traz análises do movimento em sus dinâmicas estaduais, tratando de Goiás, Ceará, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Espírito Santo e São Paulo.
