This volume presents a novel and distinct contribution to previous research on the rich Lutheran heritage of music. The realism of his paintings continues to astound observers more than six centuries on, even though our world is saturated by high-resolution images. While he sometimes directly painted himself into his works, he also suggested his presence through an array of inscriptions, signatures, and even a personal motto. The first three hundred years of the common era witnessed critical developments that would become foundational for Christianity itself, as well as for the societies and later history that emerged thereafter.
