The Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic Forest is one of the 36 hotspots for biodiversity conservation worldwide. It is a unique, large biome (more than 3000 km in latitude; 2500 in longitude), marked by high biodiversity, high degree of endemic species and, at the same time, extremely threatened. Approximately 70% of the Brazilian population lives in the area of this biome, which makes the conflict between biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of the human population a relevant issue. This book aims to cover: 1) the historical characterization and geographic variation of the biome; 2) the distribution of the diversity of some relevant taxa; 3) the main threats to biodiversity, and 4) possible opportunities to ensure the biodiversity conservation, and the economic and social sustainability. Also, it is hoped that this book can be useful for those involved in the development of public policies aimed at the conservation of this important global biome.
Model Predictive Control of Microgrids
The book shows how the operation of renewable-energy microgrids can be facilitated by the use of model predictive control (MPC). It gives readers a wide overview of control methods for microgrid operation at all levels, ranging from quality of service, to integration in the electricity market. MPC-based solutions are provided for the main control issues related to energy management and optimal operation of microgrids. Dynamics of the Pantanal Wetland in South America
This book provides readers with in-depth insights into the changes in the Pantanal wetland from its formation to the actual and likely future states. It reveals that today’s Pantanal is an evolutionary consequence of geological, ecological and, more recently, man-made events taking place at distinct space-time intervals. Topics include geotectonics and sun-earth interactions, which largely dictate the rate of drastic changes that eventually disrupt ecological stability and radically rebuild the regional landscape. Furthermore, the biota-climate system is discussed as a major driver reshaping the ecohydrology functioning of the landscape on an intermediate timescale. Also covered are major changes in the landscape ecohydrology and biodiversity due to recent land-use and climate changes induced by humankind in the Anthropocene. The ability to recognize how those temporal scales impact the Pantanal wetland provides the opportunity for wise management approaches and the sustainable development of the region.

Atlas Hidrodinâmico do Complexo Lagunar Costa Doce
O complexo lagunar Costa Doce é composto um conjunto de corpos hídricos costeiros sendo quatro os principais: o lago Guaíba, a laguna dos Patos, a lagoa Mirim e o lago da Mangueira. Está localizado próximo à divisa entre o estado do Rio Grande do Sul e o Uruguai. O presente livro apresenta os mapas de distribuição do fetch e a modelagem dos campos de ondas para os quatro maiores lagos da Costa Doce. As simulações foram realizadas pelo emprego da técnica numérica e computacional denominada Modelagem Paramétrica Bidimensional (MPB) pelo emprego do modelo ONDACAD. Os mapas foram concebidos adotando campos de vento uniforme de 5, 10, 15 e 20 ms-1 para cada uma das dezesseis direções adotadas, totalizando 256 mapas. As alturas de ondas foram determinadas pelo método paramétrico SMB, gerando resultados condicionados pelos comprimentos do fetch e pela intensidade do vento. Ao todo, entre mapas de fetch e altura de ondas, pelo presente trabalho foram gerados 320 mapas. Esperamos que este livro possa contribuir para uma melhor compreensão dos fenômenos gerados pela ação do vento sobre os corpos hídricos continentais mais importantes do estado do Rio Grande do Sul.
Social Change, Industrialization, and the Service Economy in São Paulo, 1950-2020
In the 1950s–80s, Brazil built one of the most advanced industrial networks among the "developing" countries, initially concentrated in the state of São Paulo. But from the 1980s, decentralization of industry spread to other states reducing São Paulo's relative importance in the country's industrial product. This volume draws on social, economic, and demographic data to document the accelerated industrialization of the state and its subsequent shift to a service economy amidst worsening social and economic inequality. Through its cultural institutions, universities, banking, and corporate sectors, the municipality of São Paulo would become a world metropolis. At the same time, given its rapid growth from 2 million to 12 million residents in this period, São Paulo dealt with problems of distribution, housing, and governance. This significant volume elucidates these and other trends during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, and will be an invaluable reference for scholars of history, policy, and the economy in Latin America.
