Data Analysis

"Data Analysis" in the broadest sense is the general term for a field of activities of ever-increasing importance in a time called the information age. It covers new areas with such trendy labels as, e.g., data mining or web mining as well as traditional directions emphazising, e.g., classification or knowledge organization. Leading researchers in data analysis have contributed to this volume and delivered papers on aspects ranging from scientific modeling to practical application. They have devoted their latest contributions to a book edited to honor a colleague and friend, Hans-Hermann Bock, who has been active in this field for nearly thirty years.

Statistical Learning of Complex Data

This book of peer-reviewed contributions presents the latest findings in classification, statistical learning, data analysis and related areas, including supervised and unsupervised classification, clustering, statistical analysis of mixed-type data, big data analysis, statistical modeling, graphical models and social networks. It covers both methodological aspects as well as applications to a wide range of fields such as economics, architecture, medicine, data management, consumer behavior and the gender gap. In addition, it describes the basic features of the software behind the data analysis results, and provides links to the corresponding codes and data sets where necessary. This book is intended for researchers and practitioners who are interested in the latest developments and applications in the field of data analysis and classification. It gathers selected and peer-reviewed contributions presented at the 11th Scientific Meeting of the Classification and Data Analysis Group of the Italian Statistical Society (CLADAG 2017), held in Milan, Italy, on September 13–15, 2017.

Contesting Nordicness

The terms ‘Nordic’ and ‘Scandinavian’ are widely used to refer to the politics, society and culture of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. But why have people felt the need to frame things as Nordic and why has the adjective Nordic become so prominent? This book adopts a rhetorical approach, analysing the speech acts which have shaped the meanings of the term. What do the different terms Nordic and Scandinavian have in common, and how have the uses of these terms changed in different historical periods? What accounts for the apparent upsurge in uses of the rhetoric of Nordicness in the 2010s? Drawing on eight case studies of the uses of Nordic and Scandinavian from the nine...

In this first monograph on E. T. A. Hoffmann and opera, Francien Markx examines Hoffmann’s writings on opera and the challenges they pose to established narratives of aesthetic autonomy, the search for a national opera, and Hoffmann’s biography. Markx discusses Hoffmann’s lifelong fascination with opera against the backdrop of eighteenth-century theater reform, the creation of national identity, contemporary performance practices and musical and aesthetic discourses as voiced by C. M. von Weber, A. W. Schlegel, Heine, and Wagner, among others. The book reconsiders the traditional view that German opera followed a deterministic trajectory toward Wagner’s Gesamtkunstwerk and reveals a cosmopolitan spirit in Hoffmann’s operatic vision, most notably exemplified by his controversial advocacy for Spontini in Berlin.

Classification and Data Analysis

This volume gathers peer-reviewed contributions on data analysis, classification and related areas presented at the 28th Conference of the Section on Classification and Data Analysis of the Polish Statistical Association, SKAD 2019, held in Szczecin, Poland, on September 18–20, 2019. Providing a balance between theoretical and methodological contributions and empirical papers, it covers a broad variety of topics, ranging from multivariate data analysis, classification and regression, symbolic (and other) data analysis, visualization, data mining, and computer methods to composite measures, and numerous applications of data analysis methods in economics, finance and other social sciences. The book is intended for a wide audience, including researchers at universities and research institutions, graduate and doctoral students, practitioners, data scientists and employees in public statistical institutions.
