The book contains the results of investigations of electro-physical, chemical, gas-dynamic and other processes in low-temperature plasma and their diagnostics. Both conventional spectral and optical methods of diagnostics and new and laser methods are examined, together with electrostatic probes for investigating rarefied and dense plasma, especially in the presence of chemical reactions. Problems of probe calorimetry of plasma flows are investigated and approaches to measuring the spatial and time characteristics of plasma outlined. Procedural problems of processing experimental data and automating diagnostic experiments are discussed.

The second International Conference on Trends in Quantum Electron ics (TQE'85) was held in Bucharest at the National Centre for Physics in September 1985, and brought together more than 350 scientists from 22 countries. This volume presents six review articles devoted to various topics of current interest both in classical and in quantum optics. The first article, by S. Ya. Kilin, entitled "Quanta and Information", is concerned with a multidisciplinary subject which involves optics, information theory, programming and discrete mathematics. The second article, "Optical Solitons in Periodic Media with Resonant and Off-Resonant Nonlinearities", by G. Kurizki, A.E. Kozhekin, T. Optatrny and B. Malomed, reviews the properties of optical solitons in periodic nonlinear media. The article which follows deals with an effect and its inverse which is a manifestation of hindrance and enhancement, respectively, of the evolution of a quantum system by an external agent, such as a detection apparatus. The fourth article discusses the current status of a relatively new branch of physical optics, sometimes called singular optics. The next two articles respectively present a review of advances in two-photon interferometry and their relation to investigations of the foundations of quantum theory and an examination of transverse mode shaping and selection in laser resonators.

In this newest edition of Optics and Lasers, I have added a substantial number of problems and moved most of the older ones to the end of the book. There are now about one hundred problems, which, I hope, will make the book more useful in the classroom. As before, some of the problems derive an espe cially important or useful result; these I have left integrated within the body of the book. In such cases, I state the result and, often, give it an equation number and a citation in the index. Teachers who adopt the book may obtain solutions to the problems by asking me for them on letterhead stationery. The greatest reward for an author is the feeling of satisfaction he gets when it becomes clear to him that readers find his work useful. After my book appeared in the USSR in 1975 I received many letters from fellow physicists including colleagues from Western European countries and the USA. Some of those letters, as well as official reviews of the book, made specific sug gestions for improving the book. In this book series on Optical Sciences, holography has been the subject of three previous volumes. In particular, Vol. 16, written by one of us (W. S. ) and Dr. M. Dubas, treated holographic interferometry of opaque bodies from the standpoint of deformation analysis. "Silver-Halide Recording Materials" gives a detailed analysis of the theory,the characteristics, the manufacturing, and the processing methods of silver-halide materials used for the recording of holograms. Emphasis is placed on the selection of suitable silver-halide materials for conventional as well as special holographic applications. A detailed accountof current developing and bleaching mehtods used in the production of silver-halide holograms is given. The author also supplies a large number of recipes for diffeerent types of processing baths. The text is complemented by a comprehensive list of references which will facilitate anyfurther study.
