D'Artagnan

This vintage book contains Henry James O'Brien Bedford-Jones's 1928 novel, "D'Artagnan". Although not written by Alexandre Dumas, D'Artagnan is a sequel to the his famous novel "The Three Musketeers" and continues the rollicking romantic romp through pre-revolutionary France by following the further pursuits of the famous musketeer D'Artagnan. Alexandre Dumas's most famous literary creation, d'Artagnan is loosely based on the life of Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan and his adventures with the musketeer guards. Henry James O'Brien Bedford-Jones (1887-1949) was a prolific Canadian writer who published historical, science fiction, crime, and Western fiction. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition.

A PERSONAL PROBLEM

Personal Problems is a 1980 film described as a "meta soap opera" directed by Bill Gunn and written by Ishmael Reed that depicts the life and personal relationships of an African American nurse (played by Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor) living in Harlem. The film was originally intended to be broadcast on television, but the public television network PBS and others did not pick up the soap opera. It was shown across the United States at smaller screenings throughout the 1980s until it found renewed popularity after a screening in the late 2000s at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The film was restored in 2018 by Kino Lorber and re-released at the Metrograph theater in New York City.

Authorized edition. In a cold November night of the year 1640 three young men coincidentally meet in a Parisian tavern-a musketeer of the king, a poem reciting guardsman and an escapee from the Bastille, the infamous prison of the French king. Soon these three men will be part of an intrigue of Cardinal Richelieu in his struggle for power. Around the mysterious past of the fugitive and a damsel in distress enfolds a swashbuckling adventure by the "King of the Pulps" H. Bedford-Jones, using two immortal heroes of 19th-century French literature, Alexandre Dumas' musketeer d'Artagnan and Edmond Rostand's large-nosed poet Cyrano de Bergerac.

This Fiction Business

H. Bedford-Jones wrote: "This book is not to be regarded as tyro. Under his own and assumed an authority on story-writing; by no means should it be read by anyone who aspires to literature, for, like Socrates, it will assuredly corrupt them and lead them into the worship of strange gods. It is destined only for those who desire to make a living by writing stories, in the hope that it may be of some benefit to them. "As may be imagined, the author is superbly assured of his competence to admonish, divert and perhaps assist the names, he has something like forty books, of divers natures, to his discredit, and well over a hundred book-length novels, with as many novelettes and some hundreds of short stories. At one time he even made verse pay him a living wage. With the exception of perhaps half a dozen stories, he has sold all he has written, and he writes prolifically."
