Background: After an ACL injury, treatment aims to restore knee function. Evaluation of treatment progress is important, and adequate measurement methods are necessary. The International Knee Documentation Committee- Subjective Knee Form (IKDC-SKF) is a common patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) used after ACL injury. It evaluates symptoms, function and physical activity. The IKDC-SKF had not been translated to Swedish language for use in Swedish clinical and research settings. The measurement properties of the IKDC-SKF had been tested, but no assessment of methodological quality of the studies investigating it, nor compiling of results, was published. Sooner or later after an ACL injury...
This volume presents detailed information on surgically relevant anatomy and histology of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), biomechanics, diagnostics, and ACL reconstruction. In light of the growing body of evidence demonstrating the advantages of anatomic ACL reconstruction over traditional methods, there are also discussions of single anteromedial bundle reconstruction and anatomic ACL reconstruction with abundant descriptions of experimental and clinical studies. In addition, particular attention is given not only to techniques such as ACL augmentation, bone-patella tendon-bone reconstruction and computer-assisted navigation, but it also presents expert analysis of revision of ACL rec...
This second edition of the popular guide to critical appraisal is a fully updated revision of the previous edition. Written in the same easily accessible style, The Pocket Guide to Critical Appraisal now provides annotated checklists of the most common research designs. Consistent with recent developments in evidence-based medicine, these checklists distinguish between the risk of bias in the conduct of published studies and the value of the findings for healthcare delivery. Five new chapters have been added and the original chapters have been rewritten, making the new edition a complete and concise guide for the evaluation of research quality. In addition to the checklists, the book also: d...
This book, comprising the Instructional Course Lectures delivered at the 17th ESSKA Congress in Barcelona in 2016, provides an excellent update on current scientific and clinical knowledge in the field of Orthopaedics and Sports Traumatology. A variety of interesting and controversial topics relating to the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and foot are addressed, all of which are very relevant to the daily practice of orthopaedic surgeons. The coverage includes a number of open questions, such as: How should complications be handled during rotator cuff surgery? What errors may occur during anterior cruciate ligament surgery? How much attention must be paid to meniscal root tears? Do we now understand the pathology of osteoarthritis sufficiently well and do we always identify the most successful treatment for our patients? All of the contributions are written by well-known experts from across the world. The presentations will enable the reader to gain a better understanding of pathologies and may permit more individualized treatment of patients. The book will be of interest to clinicians and researchers alike.
Frank R. Noyes, MD – internationally-renowned knee surgeon and orthopaedic sports medicine specialist – presents this unparalleled resource on the diagnosis, management, and outcomes analysis for the full range of complex knee disorders. - Relies on Dr. Noyes' meticulous clinical studies and outcomes data from peer-reviewed publications as a scientifically valid foundation for patient care. - Features detailed post-operative rehabilitation programs and protocols so that you can apply proven techniques and ease your patients' progression from one phase to the next. - Presents step-by-step descriptions on soft tissue knee repair and reconstruction for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruct...
In this book, leading experts employ an evidence-based approach to provide clear practical guidance on the important question of when and how to facilitate return to play after some of the most common injuries encountered in football. Detailed attention is paid to biomechanics, the female athlete, risk factors, injury prevention, current strategies and criteria for safe return to play, and future developments. Specific topics discussed in depth include concussion, anterior cruciate ligament and other knee injuries, back pathology, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, hip arthroscopy, and foot and ankle injuries. The chapter authors include renowned clinicians and scientists from across ...
Advanced Analysis of Motor Development explores how research is conducted in testing major issues and questions in motor development. It also looks at the evolution of research in the field, its current status, and possible future directions. This text is one of the few to examine motor development models and theories analytically while providing a context for advanced students in motor development so they can understand current and classic research in the field. Traditionally, graduate study in motor development has been approached through a compilation of readings from various sources. This text meets the need for in-depth study in a more cohesive manner by presenting parallels and highlig...
This superbly illustrated, up-to-date reference textbook covers all aspects of ankle instability and its management. Readers will find extensive information on biomechanics, injury prevention, current strategies for conservative treatment, and established and emerging surgical techniques. The most recent procedures, particularly those which are minimally invasive and arthroscopically assisted, are described and discussed in depth. Detailed attention is also devoted to controversies such as the indications and timing for conservative or surgical treatment, the current and future roles of arthroscopy, the definition of “anatomic” repair, and the upcoming concept of “anatomic reconstruction” (replication of anatomy by using a graft). The book is published in cooperation with ESSKA, and the chapter authors include clinicians and scientists working in the field of foot and ankle orthopaedics and sports medicine from across the world. All who are involved in the care of patients suffering from ankle instability, including amateur and high-level athletes, will find Lateral Ankle Instability to be an excellent source of knowledge and a valuable aid to clinical practice.
This book addresses knowledge gaps in RARP in 3 key sections: 1) Step-by-step approach including multiple technique options and innovations, 2) Patient selection, safety, outcomes, and 3) Preparing the patient for surgery. The order is more based upon knowledge priority rather than a chronologic sequence in which part 3 would go first. Part two allows more summary and commentary on evidence and part three allows some creative content that is otherwise hard to find in one place—medical evaluations, imaging, clinical trials, patient education, etc. This textbook emphasizes content for the advanced skills surgeon in that multiple techniques are presented as well as state of the art evidence. ...
Football-related injuries are a major problem, not only for players, but also for coaches and their clubs. However, there are predictable reasons behind many football-related injuries, so it is also possible to plan ahead to reduce their number and seriousness. Football Medicine covers comprehensively all aspects of injuries affecting footballers at all levels and ages. The etiology and mechanism behind injuries and the impact of disease are carefully explained to give a better understanding of the relationship between the game and the problems that players can face. The subsequent treatment and course of rehabilitation that should be carried out is also described. In addition, there is a detailed discussion of how players, together with their coaches and the medical staff, can take precautions to avoid or minimize injury.
