A picture pre-processor has been proposed which translates, at high speed, pictorial inputs, particularly black-on-white drawings, into suitable inputs for automated pattern recognition and/or scene analysis systems. The core of the system is an array of programmed logic cells onto which the input picture is projected. By appropriate local logic operations executed simultaneously by all the logic cells on the outputs of the cells adjacent to them, topologically significant features of the input picture are extracted. The instruction repertoire of the cells and instruction sequences accomplishing this feature extraction are described and examples obtained by simulation are given. (Author).
